At the end of the first episode (I choose you Pikachu!) Ho-Oh can be seen flying across the Kanto Region. And at the end of Hoenn again.

Now is my question: Did the Johto Pokémon already exist when Pokemon just started? Or was Ho-Oh a pokemon they didn't know a region/number for?

And what is Ho-Oh's role in Ash' life?

I think the moment Nintendo had the first generation, the started on the second rank of legendaries. The role Ho-oh plays in Ashes life is that Ho-oh only appears before trainers with a pure hart, and ash has one :D

    That could be true...
But why did they make a Second season with the same old Pokemon, and didn't start with Johto?
Altough some of the Johto Pokemon do apear in PKMN 2000: Lugia, Ledyba, Elekid,...

Actually "new" Pokemon are NOT newly made Pokemon... They are mostly newly discovered or just existing in other regions. Well, at least that makes sence more than the other plots :P Now, about Ho-oh, it's a legendary Pokemon :P I mean it's not that weird that they may didn't know about that. ;)

Edit: I saw your new Post just now. I guess they "invented" Orange Islands as a filler because Gold and Silver had not released when the Kanto season finished. Now I'm almost sure that in the Anime they'll go in Sevii Islands or in Orre probably since Battle Frontier will finish and they can't go in the next region as there is no next region till Diamond/Pearl's release.

Yeah. Screens had been shown. But the official release date of them was on 11/21/99. The Kanto episodes had already finish before that.

Apart from Togepi, Ho-oh (which appeard in the series), and Marill, Snabull and Donphan(which appeard in the first movie)(I think that's all), no others did appear.

This discussion is mainly about the anime, so it doesn't really belong in this forum. ^^; I'm just going to move it to Pokemon TV Show and Movies for you~

My theory is that it was a mysterious pokemon at the beginning of the anime. (remember that when it was released in Japan, GSC was not in production) Later, when they could make new pokemon, they made that mysterious bird Ho-oh. Remember when the Japan Anime was made, Johto pokemon did not exist.

Here in America I'm sure we don't have the same animals as a place like Africa, or Asia. So when they go to different places like Johto, Kanto you should assume the same thing happens. Different species live in different places. Simple. (for the show any way)

But for the game I don't know how to explain it. I assume that when Oak said there are 150 kinds he was talking about in Kanto.
