How come Ash never got Pidgeot back?

Well I know Ash did say he would come back for Pidgeot after he delivered the GS ball, but does anyone remember, after Pidgeot flew off into the distance with the Pidgey, Ash's smile left his face and he lowered his head in sadness, perhaps he was aware that there was very little chance that he'd ever see Pidgeot again. Othewise why did he look suddenly almost sad?
 
in a interview for gen 5 from the director he said "a pokemon from season 1 will return more powerful then ever!' or something like that. they dont give us solid info.....
