    For many of us, the advance generation was a big leap from the limited colors from RBY and GSC. How did you react to the jump into the new generation of handheld gaming? The full color, the better sound quality, and not only that, but Ruby/Sapphire also brought along natures, abilities, and a new EV/IV system. Was your mind blown or was this your first generation of Pokemon gaming and you didn't really have anything from the past to compare it to?

    At the time I got Sapphire, I had only played Yellow beforehand, and I lost it pretty early. So Sapphire was the 2nd main Pokemon game I got after losing Yellow. I couldn't remember much from gen I at the time, but I do remember being quite impressed when I tried to remember my old Yellow. The music, I thought, was superb and I would always have headphones with me if I was going somewhere that my parents would make me turn the volume down for.

    Like I said, Yellow was short lived for me, so I never really noticed the natures and stuff, but I knew they were new, since they weren't in Pokemon Stadium 2. It wasn't too hard of an adjustment to me. I actually have a harder time playing older games because I keep thinking stuff has Static and Poison Point.

    The only game that I had played, previous to R/S was Crystal, and I hadn't really grasped the concept of Pokemon, then.
    I had gotten Sapphire for my birthday, as I still liked Pokemon at this point. I was completely blown away, to be honest. This "new game"
    was addicting, in full color, and easy to understand. My obtaining of Sapphire was really the platform for my Pokemon fandom. So yeah, the experience I got
    from jumping into full-color Pokemon was amazing.
     
    It was a huge leap for me. My parents got me Pokemon Ruby just as we went on holiday. I spent more time playing that then actually holidaying. And like Sydian I am sometimes reluctant to use physical moves on some Pokemon in R/B/Y/G/S/C because I still think they have Static, etc.
     
    I was amazed at all the changes. Having had Yellow and Silver before, when I got Emerald (and later Leaf Green) the colour graphics were just oustanding, the nature and abilites etc. were great additions too.
     
    When I was five I got Blue, didn't really understand what you had to do. Same on Silver, but when I got Ruby it was my favourite game ever and still is the best game I ever played. I also thoroughly enjoyed FireRed.
     
    I had played the previous six games (R,B,Y,G,S,C...I was pretty obsessed...still am) but after seeing there was going to be a lot of change I was a bit wary as I have always disliked the idea of new Pokemon. However I couldnt find much to complain about in these games. The graphics were impressive at the time, there was plenty to do and explore, the music wasnt as great as the first 2 generations but it definately wasnt bad either. I loved the designs and personalities of characters such as the gym leaders and Steven and my concern about new pokemon was pointless (some of my favourites come out of Hoenn such as Absol and Milotic).

    In short I was really uncomfortable with the idea of change and it was somewhat different to the first 2 generations, but thats not a bad thing at all, its a brilliant game that I still enjoy playing after 8 years.
     
    I got Red and Blue when I was eight, later trading Red for yellow and then later buying a copy of red of someone for cheap XD And I got Gold , Silver, Crystal and the stadium games the following gift giving event after they came out (perks of being an off spring of divorce and having a Dad willing to buy your love XD),
    So I knew as much as an average 13 year old kid could know about Pokemon. However I can't remember any mind blowing experience when I got Sapphire. I think my level excitement was the same as it was when I got ahold of metal gen games. I probably would of been more excited/mind blown if Sapphire had been my first GBA experience, but alas it wasn't. it also didn't help that when the games came out I was starting middle school, one away from all my friends. so I had no one to talk to about it and quickly learned Pokemon wasn't cool anymore. Not having my own computer or the money to afford gaming magazines I guess I didn't actually get to develop an appreciation for natures and the revamps EV/IV system, as I wouldn't of known what the first was for or what was what nor would I oh known about the EV/IV stuff either aside from the vague talk of NPCs in game.
     
    I just got a Gameboy Advance for my birthday and with it i got Pokémon Ruby, the minute i fought my first battle i loved it. Never got further than the Mauville Gym, i was only 7, until i was 9 when i caught a Electrike and evolved it into Manectric then i was hooked for life. I now have all the Pokémon games up to date, with the exception off Pokémon Dash, My Pokémon Ranch and the latest Pokémon Ranger.
     
    Ahh I remember getting Sapphire for Christmas :'3
    I remember getting it a few days early becayse we were traveling to France to visit my aunt so it would keep me quiet on the jorney to Derry Airport. I remember sitting in the darkened car at 5 AM with the overhead light clipped onto my new black GBA :D
    Anyway, tearing away from the nostalgia, I was quite impressed. The last game I had played was crystal. However I had no idea about natures, IVs or EVs. I did know a bit about abilities after a little while of gameplay. I just thought the graphics were so improved :) and the feeling of beginning a new adventure... That's all I remember ^^'
     
    before emerald , i had crystal and gold. when i got emerald i was so happy and content with the difference i swear that i was almost crying. the graphics , the new abilities , and nonlame sound effects were really cool to me. unfortuneltely , i didnt understand the iv and ev system of it , so i ignored it until i got pearl . too bad about my crystal , it drowned when i forgot to take it out of my pocket before swimming .
     
    IT was pretty surprising
    but it was expected i mean
    green red and blue were grey colours
    g/s/c had a bit for colour limit
    so yeah was expected
     
    My first Pokemon game was Yellow.
    But this was no ordinary Yellow. This was Spanish Yellow. Yes, Spanish.
    I didn't understand any of it, and couldn't get out of Oak's lab.
    So you can imagine how cool it was when I could actually understand it xD
     
    This was my Fav Gen, Hands down. Besides Graphics and such, the plot was great, chasing Latios/Latias, getting to Mirage Island was just great for me. I enoyed Emerald the most since it incorperated all 3 Elemental Legies and after i ebat the story, I could go get a Ditto, Go to the BF, Discovering the Smeargle Cave thing, and that i got Groudon and Kyogre in the same game, as to graphics I was shocked, I mean from Dim color to full color made me piss myself.
     
    I first played Red years ago, then briefly Gold, finally got Crystal around.. age 14? Now I'm exploring Sapphire via emulation and I really dislike it. Red had the best gameplay - challengers were legitimately HARD - and the plot was more involved. I also prefer the sound & graphics of GSC. RSE just plays like an easier, slightly more lame version to me.
     
    I remember enjoying it at the time, thinking the graphics looked great and the Pokemon designs looked better to me in 2003/4 than nowadays. However, the plot was meh, the difficulty was pretty easy most of the time (I had both Ruby and Sapphire on Christmas Day and was about 3/4s through the game on that same day) and the lack of a decent rival character in May really annoyed the hell out of me.

    Red/Blue/Yellow was great, Gold/Silver/Crystal was even better despite the inconsistent levelling and depressing state that Kanto was in, but Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald was like taking two steps back for me, despite the colourful graphics. I don't hate it though, just disappointed with elements of it.

    Edit: Oh and I hate Natures, even though I love Abilities. Natures made the Pokemon fanbase an irritating one for competitive battling and the pompous attitudes that some people take when you tell people your team really sucks.

    WHERE THE HELL IS PERSIAN?! WHY WAS IT EXCLUDED?!

    Other than that, I thought the graphics were cool and I liked the Secret Base concept. Oh, and Archie's battle music was epic and the female School Kid sprites were adorable.

    I have a similar story to that. Gold was my first game, but I stuck it in my overalls and they were put in the washer. So my saving was corrupted each time. So when I got Sapphire for my 9th birthday I was so excited. It was a shock for me too, but I mostly played non-pokemon games on the gbc, which also had limited colors. I fell in love with Sapphire, loved the music, and the starters captured my heart <3
     
    My first game was red when I was like...8 or 9 or something. I always picked charizard and I got it to like lvl 80 with a pikachu not that high and some others. I basically used one pokemon the whole time. XD Silver was awesome to me. I remember my rival got a girl pokemon lmao. Crystal was my fav. I was SO psyched when I pre-ordered it. I was probably like 12 or something than. I played it all the time. And sapphire was awesome to me. I think I was in 6th or 7th grade than...ehh idk
     
    The 1st game I played personally was FireRed. I didn't really pay attention, I just played through it. It was 4th gen that really opened my eyes. I was used to the graphics so no problems there. I was suprised at the 3D environment and liked the 2D better.
