How do you make your Pokemon team?

I build my team based on the Elite Four's Pokemon. Since SS's E4 Pokemon are way different than that of DPPt, I had a lot of researching to do (I'm such a cheater :c). If I get a certain Pokemon later on in the game, I use substitutes. It's kind of a must for me to have 6 pokemon on my team.
 
Well since I play my Pokemon games slowly by which I mean I catch every living thing in those grassy patches! I can make up my mind with what I caught and if I need to do a little research, for the Pokemon I will... I just play and catch instead of plan beforehand. I never abandon though since It would have been waisted EXP and time imo...
 
For Gen I-IV, I usually don't plan it out much until I get ready to take on the Elite 4. In Black and White, though, my team is based entirely around the current Gym Leader's weakness and my starter. I took great offense to losing to Lenora's level 20 Watchog
