How Do You Make Your Regular Playthrough More Interesting?

god i feel ancient now, people more than a decade younger than me saying this

i've been playing Pokemon for longer than you've been alive

....

but to not be completely off-topic: I kinda don't do a whole lot to spice up my playthroughs really. At most I just try to not use Pokemon I've used before. Used to do monotype runs years ago but haven't felt like it since

Now that you mention it I've been playing the games for 15 years, that's only 6 years of my life I haven't been playing the games in some form or another.

Also to answer the question. I will normally try doing a challenge run, nuzlocke, mono-type only using a certain pokemon, etc.

If I'm playing a new game, I try and go in as blind as possible so I don't have any real idea what's in store for me. Even today I was playing through Sword, and came across a Pokemon I had no idea existed.

Outside of that, going with Set rather than Switch battles, and limiting my healing items in battle (no more than 2 per major fight) helps add an extra element of challenge to playthroughs when it might lack one otherwise.
