How is the manga different from the anime?

    I was just wondering, is it just me, or is there many differences from the anime
     
    Which manga? There's several different series, including Adventures/Special and Electric Tales of Pikachu.

    If you mean Special, then yes, there's an abundance of differences because Special is meant to be a combination of its own series and a series that vaguely takes after the games, not the anime. So, you'll have completely different characters (with their own separate characterizations), locations that appear in the games but not the anime, events that didn't take place in either, et cetera.

    Electric Tales of Pikachu, meanwhile, is possibly the closest interpretation to the anime, but even then, there's a lot of differences, as it's supposed to be its own series too. So, while you have Ash and Pikachu, there's a few things that are similar between his journey in that manga series and his journey in the anime and a few things that are different.

    I won't get into any other manga series, mostly because I'm a bit too lazy to touch on them. The basic point, though, is that there really isn't a series that follows the anime exactly, and the anime itself isn't based on any of the manga series.

    Manga follows the Games, which we all follow more than we do the anime

    Pokemon Special is a manga that as previously mentioned, follows the game more closely than the anime does. They also develop arcs towards the end of each gen (R/B/Y gen having the E4 arc and G/S/C having the Neo Rocket arc). It's my favorite manga interpretation of Pokemon, and probably even one of my favorite manga, period. (too bad it's near impossible to find, and they stopped with GSC over here)

    Electric Tale of Pikachu follows the anime more, it's more comedic than Special is. To be honest, I haven't read much of it, so my knowledge of it beyond Cerulean City is limited.
     
    Oh, I was also thinking about whether the characters are more mature or if the gymleaders have different motives than in the anime. I've read in Wikipedia that the plot for the mangas are more mature and complex than what the anime currently shows...
     
    Again, it depends. In Adventures, yes, the plots are definitely more mature. Characters have died, been possessed, attempted to take over the world with armies of Pokemon, planned the decimation of the human race, had limbs cut off (and put back on), and been turned to stone. Plots also tend to be pretty involved, using a large amount of the cast and spanning most of the arcs, rather than just a volume or two. The characters tend to vary as to whether or not they're mature in terms of characterization. Generally, by the Yellow arc, yes, they're more mature than the anime's (and, on a level, the game's) characters.

    In Electric Tales of Pikachu, the only thing that's really mature are some of the jokes. The plot's pretty much on the same level as the first season of the anime, and the characters are just as goofy.

    I admit I don't know numbers by heart, but you won't get to them right away (except for the possession thing... and characters getting chopped up, if you count Pokemon). Characters tend to die now and then throughout the series, notably in the RS arc (and GSC, if I recall correctly). One of the main characters loses a limb in I believe volume seven, part of the Yellow arc, although if you count Pokemon in this tally, then every time Koga's Arbok appears. Take over the world plots tend to happen in every major arc, and it's spread out throughout several volumes, with the main characters attempting to stop said plot. Characters have been possessed as early as the end of the first volume. And I won't say what happens when characters get turned to stone, as that's a major spoiler, and I'm too lazy to use the spoiler tag.

    That sounds painful for Brock's Onix XD
    Also, it said some of the gymleaders were on the side of evil in Pokemon Adventures, eg Koga.

    And some of the gymleaders in Electric Tale were markedly different from the anime (eg, the personality of Sabrina being nicer)

    Here is the difference between the Pokemon Special (Adventures) manga and the Anime, ahem..*drumroll*.................................................................................................................. The manga has a real plot. (ta-dah!)
