Question: how long...

Depends on the forum you posted the thread in. Usually it's no longer than 24 hours. However if it is not approved in about 2/3 days. PM the corresponding Moderator or a Super Moderator.
 
Actually, just to add on. Let's say for example, you posted in... Strategies and Movesets, a moderated forum, if it's not approved after awhile, while in some cases you can ask... It's mainly a simple answer; Forums that have moderated threads are really simple, all people have to do is read and follow the stickies & all the important threads. Mainly the specific rules of that forum. If you follow all the standards in them, it should be approved. If not, you probably didn't get up to scratch and should review the important threads and such.
