of the same pokemon? when i first started playing, i'd only catch one of each new pokemon i saw. but then i realized that's kind of dumb, especially after i realized how much their stats can really vary. so i started catching like three of the same one. how about you guys?

In the beginning, Pokeballs are precious. I catch two of each if it's a Pokemon I intend to use later in the game, one if I just need it early in the game (Butterfree/Mankey to defeat Brock, Oddish to use Sleep Powder and Cut, etc.).

Later in the game I'll catch a few of each I want, and restart the game a few times for traded/found Pokemon, but by about halfway I've usually got most of the team I'm going to use anyhow.

I usually only ever catch the Pokémon I plan to use in my team. After that, it's whatever I fancy and whoever catches my eye. I'm not a big 'dex filler. :3

I alweays used to catch every pokemon i saw, but only 1 of each. But having to train 30 pokemon for the third Gym was a pain in the bum, so i'm sticking with oen of each type now. Aka, one Grass, one Water, one Fire, one Psychic etc.

I wasted some time restarting the game to get an Eevee with better stats, but I like to think it paid off. The first Eevee had significantly lower stats in just about everything than the one I settled on.

Helps to get as many dual types (or just versatile ones like Lapras, Snorlax, etc.) as you can and teach them as many different types of move as you can - never have to go back to the stupid PC to get something with type advantage out. :P

When playing games that were produced before the age of natures and abilities, I just catch one Pokemon.
In gen 3 and 4, I'm more of a perfectionalist and catch/breed tons of Pokemon until I get a decent nature and the right ability.

at first, i just get one more to help in double battles and 2 more as hm slaves. i can play the whole game without catching any more lol unless i find a rare guy of course...
afterwards i go around pokeball-crazy for the dex.

I completed the Pokedex in Platinum. Now I only catch what I need.

As for catching multiple Pokemon to compare their stats, natures, etc., I do something very similar when breeding for my competitive team, as only the best will do. In-game, i really don't care and will only focus on getting one with a decent nature.

If a new game is released and I get it, every time I meet a new Pokemon, I'll probably catch it. Like with SoulSilver, I caught everything I saw just because...ya know. New game and I want stuff in the PC. If I've played through, I only catch HM slaves, the Pokemon I plan to have by the end of the game, and if I see a Pokemon that typically doesn't appear very often (like Absol in RSE) then I'll try my luck at getting it, even if I don't plan on using it.
