Firstly, we all needed closure for Amorshipping (SerenaxAsh) and by the looks of things, the anime writers aren't going to give us any closure... so Ash should have won the league (i know pretty cliche'd response to the infamous final match of Kalos League) let's be honest here, the events that followed would have been almost exactly the same with only a few minor differences that not many people would notice... However during the final battle, Ash is injured while Ash-Greninja is inside the stone Zygarde (because you know their connection)
While Ash is sleeping in the hospital Serena is watching over Ash, Bonnie notices her, and asks her a question: "do you have a crush on Ash?" and after prying deeper and deeper in it, Bonnie wears Serena down to a confession where she confirms her crush on Ash, But unbeknownst to her Ash had woken up halfway through the conversation, so when she admits that she loves Ash, he heard every word exactly. When Ash confronts her about it, she runs off in embarrassment. Jessie from Team Rocket overhears this conversation and has one of those moments where she's not the generic villain she is in every other episode, in her disguise as Jessilee and talks with her pretending that she didn't overhear Serena's confession, and Serena feeling more sure of herself and this time confesses to Ash properly. then there's that conversation she had with that Palarmo woman as she did in the episode released last weeks. once Ash's leg is healed he offers to go to Hoenn with her, and promises to take her on a date after her first contest

there, we have an ending to the anime better than the writers could have ever done
