yeah, i don't even know what EVs and IVs are, i was wondering the same thing. I had pokemon red and blue back in 98 when it first came out, but i just got diamond yesterday and it's way more in-depth.

EV training is training but training especially at the stats. It gives an advantage then those who don't there's a sticky that explains more. It's in Stratagies & Movesets forum.

Ev's is basicly this.

When you fight a Graveler for example, and kill it you will get 2 defensive points from it. Add up the points to 10 i think it is and it will raise your defense stat up 1 extra over the normal when you level.

Each Pokemon has diff points, be it TentaCruel for Special Defense, or Graveler for defense, or perhaps Golduck for Special atk, and Bidoof for HP, Bibarel for ATK, and starly for speed.

Also each one has a diff number of points. For example starly gives out 1 Speed EV, while its evolved Form gives out 2. Geodude gives out 1 while graveler gives out 2.

Ev training certain stats will give your pokemon a higher atk or defense or speed ect then normal. So if you have 2 Starmie's both level 100 a normal one against a EV trained one and the normal one lets say has 300 Speed, and you EV trained the other starmie putting the maximum 252-255 EV in speed it will have like 350 or something for explanitory purpose's.

Iv 's are a little more complicated. To make it easier to understand Basicly each Pokemon has a set number of IV's. IV's are the pokemon's stats and determine if the stats at level 100 will be higher or lower.

Basicly If you have a Pokemon like starmie and its speed IV is 31 which is the max, its speed will be the max it can be lets say the max is 300. Then you get another starmie and its IV is only 20 at level 100 it will be like 290. So if the 2 fight the one that is 31 will go first.

To find out pokemon IV's simply get your team together get someone's WIFI info and battle eachother in the level 100 bracket. Write down each pokemon's stat HP/ATK ect. Then go here

*link removed*

Find your pokemon put in level 100, show advanced options, select the Pokemon's nature for example adament, click on use ev's for calculating but dont type anything in yet. Click on Input stats, now type in the pokemons atk speed and so forth then click on update and it will tell you how good or bad the IV's are. The higher they are the higher its stat is going to be.

Now Your pokemon could have EV's in it from battling pokemon if this is the case and you dont know what there in you need to use berry's to remove those EV's to get a accurate IV count.

I hope this all makes sense. Oh yea one more thing. Natures ditermine which stat will be higher then normal and which will be lower.

Example of this is if your pokemon is Adament then it will have a above average atk, but its special atk will be lower. This is why people breed pokemon some pokemon have strong stat like say cloyster his DEF is really high, and his atk is higher then his special atk. So you want a Impish Cloyster this raises his defense, but lowers his special atk. Allowing you get the maximum defense possible while saving his Atk stat from being lowerd. Just dont use special atk move's cuss they wont do much dmg being lowerd from the impish nature.

Ok simplified (And correct) version:
*Each pokemon has an EV score which is related to a stat. As an example zubat has 1 in speed.
*When you KO a pokemon, you get Effort Points, equal to those of the pokemon you beat. So if you beat a zubat you will get 1 speed effort point.
*When you get 4 effort points in one stat, you gain a +1 boost to it. Simple enough really.
*A pokemon can get a maximum of 510 Effort points, with a maximum of 255 in a single stat. However only 252 of these are useful, as the remainder does not divide into 4.
*There are several items and methods of increasing the EVs a pokemon gets, which are detailed in the FAQ
*Full details on what EVs pokemon have can be found at www.serebii.net

IVs are more complicated, but the jist of it is that each pokemon is assigned a random number in each stat, from 0 to 31. The higher the number, the higher their stat can go. The IV calculator suggested by candymancan is fine, but you need to know the EVs to calculate them.

So say you had a latias with 31 SpDef IVs and 252 SpDef EVs, its Special defence would be at its maximum of 394, very high indeed. Compare this to one without the EVs, and it would only be 330, because 252 divided by 4= 63. Thats a possible 64 stat points you're missing out on by not EV training!

You dont really need to worry about EVing until you are ready to try real competetive battling. When playing in-game, Levels are what matter. But on sites like this, you need to EV if you hope to win at all.
