Because of the rise of Pokemon Go, my interest in playing through the games has been on my mind a ton.

I was curious of anyones input on how I can easily play through all the generations of pokemon with the least amount of devices.

I know you can get emulators on your phone or computer, I also know of course the new games require a hand held device. Im wondering if this desire of mine has been felt like others. My ideal situation would be to take a favorite pokemon through the early generations all the way to the current games and beyond.

Thank you in advance for any advice.

If you're fine with counting remakes as have playing the original verision, you could basically do it entirely on a 3DS.

Gen 1 was re-released about a year ago on the 3DS eShop/VC, so you can play those via that. While the only things you can play Gold/Silver/Crystal (Gen 2) on are GameBoy/GBC/GameBoy Advance, their remakes, HeartGold/SoulSilver, were DS titles and so can be played on a 3DS. Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald (Gen 3) was remade into the 3DS games Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire. Diamond/Pearl/Platinum (Gen 4) are DS games, and so like HG/SS can be played on a 3DS. Same goes for the Gen 5 games (Black/White and Black2/White2). The most recent two generations (XY and Sun/Moon) were made for the 3DS.

If you want to play the originals and no remakes at all, you'll need to get a Game Boy Advance or use an emulator in addition to a 3DS to play everything while using the minimum number of devices.

This method only involves an android phone and a 3ds. (Must be a good quality smartphone) You will also need a enough money to purchase the games and the 3ds. (3ds is around 150$ and the emulators are around 18$ in total)

Generation 1 & 2- Pokemon Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, and Crystal can be played by buying MyOldBoy on an android device. It can play gameboy and gameboy advance games.

Generation 3 - Pokemon Sapphire, Ruby, Emerald, Leafgreen, and Firered can be played by buying MyBoy on an android device. The emulator can run gameboy games.

Generation 4 & 5 - Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, Heartgold, Soulsilver, Black, White, Black 2, and White 2 can be played by getting Drastic DS Emulator for an android device. The emulator can run DS games.

Generation 6 & 7 (The current one) - Pokemon X, Y, Alpha Sapphire, Omega Ruby, Sun, and Moon can only be run by buying a legitimate 3ds. The system itself is around 150$ depending on the model and the games are 40$ each.

    Hope this helps

Gen One - 3DS Virtual Console
Gen Two - HGSS on the DS (which can obviously be played on the 3DS)
Gen Three - Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire
Gen Four - DPP on the DS
Gen Five - BW and B2W2 on the DS
Gen Six - XY on the 3DS
    Gen 7 - SM on the 3DS

That's if your counting the remakes as sorta the same as the originals -which they're definitely not. If you wanna experience Generation two and three properly you're gonna have to get a GameBoy Advance and a original DS.
