Pachirisu is the Japanese name for it, they kept it.
I know 'Risu' means squirrel and 'Pachi' means... like the sound electricity makes. You know that crackiling snapping sound.
I have no idea but I do have a pokemon that I would like to know how they named it, Gorebyss. How'd they name that. I remember there was this one site that explained it all, but I can't remember it.
