So lets say you were raising a defensive pokemon, which would be more benificial to raise EVs in, defence/sp defence or HP??? Obviously all three would be a good idea to raise, but HP is both sp defence and defence, so would it be a better choice to raise it more? :P

somewhat of a balance of both... really it depends most of the time. It's where battling experience comes in which I severely lack (along with a lot of things)

There?s something on the NB boards that discusses it, but I am lazy so I will wait for Mana to come paraphrase. ;x

It depends. If a Pokemon has a one defense that's really high and another that's low (like Aggron having high defense and low special defense) then perhaps raising just defense rather than HP would be better. But most of the time it's better to play it safe with HP.

I would prefer raising defense/s.defense, because for example, Wailord has A LOT of HP, but without defense/s.defense, all it's HP can be taken out with one hit...

Ha Ha kairi, actually I don't visit the RS strats that often, if ever, since I'm an RS nub.

Anyways, if you're Eving, remember that Defense is the divsor, while HP is the endurance value. The higher the divisor, the lower the damage, but this is not subtraction, so having 10 defense instead of 5 will cut your damage in half, remember that.

When I do a defensive poke, I like to max out HP, and then put most of EVs in the stronger Defense (unless both are like 299, then I boost 1 with personality, but evens the stats out in teh end) and leave like 6 EVs in the defense that's under 220 :-x

Does anyone know the Mathematical formulae for working out damage in R/S? If so, I can make a comparison between HP and Def/Sp Def and give people a clue as to which might be better

lol... I tried graphing it out on excel before, but then for some Pokemon the cases vary so differently that it's kinda useless... unless you're graphing it out for damage-percentage wise (which is darn difficult because you'll need to adjust all the data depending on each individual Pokemon.)

The formula can be found on battle mechanics in gamefaqs.com
