You need the save patch that makes saving work.

PLus you could also change the asettings of the gameboy. ITs been said somwhere before

how do you get a save patch

You download it. Here's the save patch I have for FireRed. Put it in the same directory as the rom and patch it in. Read the IPS Patching thread in the Hacks and Emulation forum for help doing that.
