Time for a MEGA SIZED review, that's right! I'm watching POKEMON: THE FIRST MOVIE!
Pokemon: The First Movie:
** The atmosphere in this opening scene in IN-CRED-IBLE, the music/ancient temple atmosphere is so good!
** WOW the scene where Mewtwo mutters "where am I, why am I, who am I" CHILLS. The dark atmosphere is really well-done.
So what is this scene with the creepy girl about.
-- The direction in this scene is really good but I don't understand what's going on? Who's the ghost girl
* Holy cow this is one epic introduction to the main feature! Where the narrator gives a super-profound speech about life, chills!, ESPECIALLY with Mewtwo's whispery harsh voice.
*** In fact this ENTIRE opening scene is epic. Mewtwo's voice acting is SO good, and his existentialist dialogue is Chilling. The dying words of the scientist ("We dreamed of creating the most powerful Pokemon... and we succeeded") WOW.
This doesn't feel like a Pokemon movie at ALL! It feels like a dark sci-fi Summer Blockbuster.
Well there goes that. NOW it feels like Pokemon (Not a bad thing!)
* Some funny scenes with lazy Ash.
-- SIGH this battle scene is ruined because of a DANCE remix of the theme song I don't like.
** Pikachu eating really fast
Lol James sounded like he was saying "Yes, Tupac"
Wow Mewtwo can control the weather and make storms. He should stop having such a grudge against humans and should Let It Go.
*** I LOVE the scene where someone talks about an epic prophecy or something and Jenny just responds "And that's why the ferry was cancelled".
***
I love the completely out-of-nowhere line:
"Stroke! Stroke! Stroke! I think i'm going to have one!" Feels like something out of Family Guy!
* And the classic "Vikings live in Minnesota" joke. I never knew Minnesota existed in Pokeverse.
** Another well-done scene with them fighting the storm.
AMAZING animation with the New Island, it almost looks real! Same with the clouds below Mew.
Hey it's Mew. Mew's cuteness is overrated I feel. It's no Pikachu.
Wow Scyther sounds like Judas Priest's Rob Halford.
** Funny scene with Meowth, with clever integration of the "who's that Pokemon!"
** Another awesome action scene! The music really helps! But it would be better if my Iron Maiden Pokemon dream came true.
I'm gonna gush again over how AMAZING Mewtwo's voice is!
"Never Mind The Pokeballs" sounds like a fake parody album name.
* Pikachu's voice after getting out of the Pokeball.
"The Hour of Vengance Draws Near" SO badass!
--- Oh MAN "Brother My Brother" is a terrible song! Blander than the blandest bland piece of bread to make it out of a bread factory it sounds like something you'd find playing in your local supermarket. AND THE MOVIE falls apart after this. Everyone delivers a bland speech about why fighting is wrong in a series about fighting monsters OBVIOUSLY shoehorned in to appease the concerned parents. Sad, sad, sad.
** Though I DID get a little Misty-eyed at Meowth's speech. "We have a lot in common. The same earth, the same air, the same sky. How about instead of focusing on what's different we focus on what's the same?" Yearbook quote.
*** THE ENDING. Good GOD the ending. From the scene where Pikachu don't wanna fite and is left sobbing, to the scene where Ash is petrified, with Pikachu trying desparately to wake him up (The way he sounds like he's screaming "WAKE UP!" chills right up the spine), to the part where all the clones sail into the air, the animation, direction, voice acting, and everything... Just un-be-freaking-leavible. Everything combined SO perfectly that I was dangerously close to letting the waterworks loose at the end. Probably the greatest scene in Pokemon history, turning what could've been a crappy sappy ending into an emotional masterwork. And then we get Mewtwo's "I see now that the circumstances of one's birth are irrelevant, it is what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are" another incredibly profound yearbook quote. Beautiful. Simply Outstanding.
Closing Thoughts:
This was a great movie!
I'm gonna say it first. THE DIRECTION/PRODUCTION WAS FREAKING AMAZING. Mewtwo was an incredible villain, from his super-chilling voice to his dialogue (REALLY incredible dialogue by him posted above). The animation in the movie was super-good, scenery like the clouds and New Island looked almost real and life-like.
But the atmosphere of the movie is what cinched it. The first 25 minutes were amazingly chilling and dark, feeling less like a Pokemon movie and more like a dark sci-fi thriller. The middle of the movie had more great scenes, like the scene where they are fighting the waves, but the LAST fifteen minutes, some of the best scenes of the franchise, take the cake. The entire atmosphere surrounding the movie was incredible but those bits showed it best.
Of course there were other positives too. The story was compelling and surprisingly dark for Pokemon, with a villain who thinks humanity is worthless and should be killed, and the messages throughout the movie (Sans one shoehorned one) were very well-done and profound, especially the "circumstances of one's birth" part, and it was really interesting how they deconstructed the Pokemon franchise by mentioning how people treat Pokemon like slaves. There were some good laughs too, mentioned above. And the action was tops.
But it wasn't a 10. Why? Three big ones. One: The first action scene, which could have been good if not for a pathetic Pokemon Theme Dance Mix in the background. Two: "Brother My Brother" a horrendously cheesy/bland supermarket song, and three: The preachy, out of nowhere, and probably shoehorned "fighting is wrong" bit. Plus, the plot was kinda thin, it really was a long, long (but great) battle scene.
Still, an excellent movie. 9/10.
