Hi, I thought it'd be nice to show my sprites to a big community like this and see what people think about them. There's a few to show so hopefully someone will find something they can comment on. My main specialty is pixel-over-and-edits but I have done some scratching which I usually am quite proud of, so it'll be mentioned :3

    Suicune Pixel-over

Original Concept Art by Ken Sugimori:

This was my first serious attempt at spriting, and I must say that pixel-overs must be the VERY best way to start. So much fun and I learned an absolute ton about shading, outlining and colouring.

Soon after, I had done this, an Ampure pixel-over from Pokemon Topaz:

Some trainers, most of them are pixel-overs of sketches I or someone else did though some are just heavy edits and splices. If you can guess which sprite the second one was based off of I'll give you a cookie!:

Incidentally all of these are being used for Topaz.

Scratch requests I've done for other people that I'm very proud of:

(A couple of them had concept art, but the sprite is differently posed and not just pixel-over'd)

Pixel-over-edit requests I've done for other people that I'm also very proud of:

Recognize the last two? Probably not, because there were some big edits, but they're Wavern and Naga from Bakugon, Pokemon-ified as a request.

So hope you enjoyed my little gallery, and feel free to critique & comment a bit, a lot, as much as you like! Thanks!

The Pixal-Overs are the best ones I've seen in a long time. All of your sprites look great, I see no problems with shading or lineart EXCEPT on the pixal-overs. The dark outline on the ribbions stand out quite a bit as they do on the front paws.

The second sprite has the legs and torso of the Officer, and the right hand of the Reporter, from D/P. I'm going to hazard a guess and say that you didn't bother to replace the Officer's head, and just edited it.

Your pixel-overs and scratch sprites are really good, but your trainers leave a bit to be desired. The biggest problem is the size of the heads... the heads on the three males are way too small, and the woman in blue's is too big. Your arm lengths/structures are also a bit off.

Thanks for the critique! Yeah, I'm still working on trainers. I completely rescratched the face and hair for the Officer edit, so your guess was thankfully off.

It's so hard to guess what size the heads need to be. On official sprites they seem unnaturally large, yet they still look good. I can't seem to replicate that. I'll keep on practicing, I guess, spriting's such a good time killer :3

    Here's a couple I just did today!

For those who read random Hawaiian books, this is Humu the humuhumunukunukuapua'a from "Humu - The Little Fish Who Wished Away His Colors" illustrated by Yuko Green. It's not really a pixel-over but I just copied the original so I can't really claim it's a scratch either. =S

This is Aaganik from Pokemon Turquoise. It's a scratch, based off of TaintedICE's awesome concept art and yes, I know that the corner where he starts to turn is off... If anyone could suggest how to fix that I'd be most grateful.

    I like Humu!
    It's a very nice concept.
But some of the colours need to flow in with the other colours better.
    Your purple and light blue.
But I like the sprite :)

    Aaganik is kinda flat.
Nice concept, but your version is too long.
If you copied the concept art, you should have made the sprite alot thicker and shorter.
I think redoing the sprite would be best, yours has alot of flaws.
Like the way its bending it's body, the face on the chest is nicely done though.

Try to make the body smaller and thicker :p

woah, what a random name and fish. Really digging the colors on this sprite

The flower it's holding is a forget-me-not, by the way, and the pose was from a chipmunk picture I googled XD It's also my first foray into the realm of dithering, and I think I pulled it off okay here. I'm not too sure about this one because to me it doesn't look Pokemon-ish enough. I wonder what's wrong...

I know what the problem with your chipmunk sprite is; the head is too small. Most Pokemon have heads that are around half the size of their bodies, especially the small and cute ones. Check out Skitty, for example.
    [PokeCommunity.com] IB's sprite showcase

Check out the size of that noggin! It's also important to have a memorable face, but I think your chipmunk's face is fine as-is... Maybe a little too much light is reflected in its eye. The major thing, though, is the size of the head. I also happen to be working on a line of grass-types similar to yours (based on weasels, minks and stoats... they look like rodents, but aren't), so I have at least a little experience.

I just noticed another issue... Behind the front leg are two... things. Is that supposed to be the right front leg? Looking at the image I think you based the pose on, were you trying to copy the way its toes are separated?

Now that you mention it you're right. I was looking at Pachirisu and other such sprites to see what was wrong, and I didn't notice that their heads were huge!

As for the legs, I think I wasn't quite sure where the far leg should go, since it isn't at all seen in the photograph and I didn't see where the chipmunk would have put its right paw, and so that was my attempt at putting in another leg to steady itself. Maybe they're too close together?

Well, it kind of looks like it has three front legs... You should refer to Umbreon and other four-legged Pokemon if you have doubts about something like that. I like to keep three to six reference images where I can easily access them while working on a sprite, as seen here, which tend to change with the feature I'm working on. As you can see in the image, the muzzle didn't turn out anything like the references I chose, but it's thanks to those images that I was able to come to that decision.

I intended to say this last time, but it slipped my mind; nice work on the dithering!

The problem with this picture is the fakemon seems to have three legs in the front

    This just in:

    [PokeCommunity.com] IB's sprite showcase

A little small but I think I captured him correctly. Takhampos is a pixel-over of a concept originally by Phoenixsong. You can look at her concept here.

God, you have no idea how ironic this is? I was totally going to pixel over that exact concept art :x. Anyway, this is really well done. There are a few things that are bothering me about it though. Mostly concerning the tissue like tail and towards the left most corner of it. A few pixels look very off. Maybe a fix could be to make it circular or to try and make on a curve etc. Also, I am really bothered about the front left paw/foot. Where the leg bends, by the face, it looks like it's been snapped in half? Either way, you've done a really good job be proud of it.

It's not really that surprising that you wanted to pixel over that art. Sugimori's art is really nice for pixelling over, for obvious reasons :D You should do it anyway, don't let my attempt stand in the way of your fun!

You're right for a lot of your critique. However, Suicune was my first sprite and I've moved on since then. Maybe one day if I become a terrific spriter it'll irk me enough to make me want to fix it, but right now I'm concentrating on requests and other ideas I have.

Thanks so much for your critique though! I'll keep your advice in mind even when I'm doing new sprites!
