I think there should only be a multi mode, to prevent confusion and stuff, so when nobody else is on it's exactly the same, only there are no trainer battles and nobody sees the speech balloons but you.

I'd like to see one like yours, on the DS, but you can actually have a party of human friends, IRL, that train and travel with you on the second mode. The first one could be the same, just by yourself, when there's no one nearby.
