I never got why cards get banned from tournaments just because the set is either old or the card is too good.

That totally ruins the point of thsoe cards.

I say if the cards were just gonna be banned a few years later or too good for gameplay, they just shouldn't make them at all.

So if I want to use, let's say Oddish (Jungle 58), i should be able to, even though it was made something years ago.

You have to realize that it costs money to support something like a trading card game league network, and the only way to keep making money is to make more cards, and the only way to keep people buying more, and to keep it balanced for newer players so it's easier for them to jump into Organized Play is to make the older cards no longer play legal. This also allows for them to change the core of the competitive game so that one deck isn't too dominant for years and years, driving away players who are sick of facing the same decks all the time, and scaring off new players because those cards would cost so much. They actually got the idea from Wizards of the Coast, the company that helped them develop the game and also the company that prints the original TCG, Magic: The Gathering.

And your Oddish is only banned at tournaments. I'm pretty sure most leagues will allow you to play with an unlimited deck, but you're not gonna win very many matches because the newer cards are much more efficient and have higher HP totals.

I know, but I just loved the older card's illustrations.

And to think they will never see another tournament again breaks me up. :(

That's kinda one reason I love MtG. While there are still banned cards and T2 so that new card stay relevant. We also have core sets, which include beloved and staple cards. A lot of time with original or classic artwork.

The different play formats for tournaments is one thing I wish Nintendo would adopt for the Pokemon TCG. I mean MTG has Limited, Standard, Extended, and Type 1.5 at a minimum, if my memory serves.
