Image Verification Attempts Problem

When I was registering, I tried about 5 times to successfully fill in the Image Verification. All other Image Verifications from other forums have not had this problem.

I think it was only because the letters were distorted in a way that made them ambiguous, for example, in the first try it was X and K, in the second it was A and R, but in the third and fourth, there was a H that was distorted at the bottom. Every time I but the H in where it should be, it stopped me from registering. (Inconveniently, I had to put my password back in so much that I will never forget it - 10 times).

On the fifth time, the figures were more clear, but I expected it to fail again, but it didn't. I was wondering if the attempts were caused by something more than just slightly ambiguous letters that will always be the other possibility no matter which one you put in.

i'm sure you came accross a bad run of the images that vB generates.. I know they make it somewhat hard to read on purpose and that can sometimes cause some issues like you have described. the only thing you can really do, as you've done, is keep trying.

It's most likely that you were reading something you weren't required to read. I'm not completely sure though.
Nah. The majority of times people register on forums there's always one of those you have to decipher and it's a real bugger.

I wasn't complaining I was just pointing out an annoyance. :p

    Ohh.

Well the idea of it being hard to decipher is because spambots could observe the appearance of the image and translate it into the required lettering. When it's so hard that it requires a human to make a few unsuccessful attempts first, you know it's safe.

Not particularly. The image probably shares some kind of patten which you could decipher with effort. :p

They could just be things like "kay ex three nine aych four" in bubble writing and the spam bots wouldn't be able to decipher that as easily, but humans would easily recognise it as KX39H4.

And it doesn't matter for different languages because many languages use different characters so the Image Verifications would be customised for that anyway.
