As someone who took some finance classes in college, I can say investment can be a lot of things. You can invest in the stock market, your college education, remodeling a home and then sell it, start your own business or invest in your friend's business.
Usually when someone puts their money in something, they expect some gain from it and hence why they did that. Sometimes you might get cash fast, but usually the investors are aware those things take time. Hope this answers your question haha.
Oh, and yeah be careful what you invest in (example, scams).
