My cousin is getting an iPod and he wants to know if you have to have iTunes in order to put your songs onto the iPod.

Yes, in order to put songs on an iPod you do need to have iTunes.

For Linux\BSD, there's GTKPod, and I beleive Amarok can also sync a playlist with an iPod.

There's a plugin for Winamp that allows you to use that to manage your iPod's music. ^_^; I'm sure there are likely plugins available for other popular media players, too, if you look around.

and you can just put your mp3 or mp4 files straight int the drive in the speal file for music it works for my ipod and psp
