is HP better than defenses?

i have two careful umbreons, of same level. (6)

one umbreon has 29 hp, with def 19/ sdef 22

the other, 27 hp, def 20/ sdef 23

which one should i use?

so in general, is HP better than defenses? like is it better to raise hp EV over defensive?

This is better fit in Strategies & Movesets, so that's where I've put it.

From my experiences with the Pokemon games, I might go with the second Umbreon. Since they're both of the same level, but the second one has higher defensive stats, I would put my money on that. HP is naturally important as well, but with better defense stats on the second Umbreon, then the two extra HP points your first Umbreon has won't do it as much good as the Umbreon with higher defenses.

Just my two cents. :x~ *must have said "Umbreon" more times than needed in that post* ...XD

For your Umbreon's stats, are you talking about the real stats or their IVs?

Secondly, what are their Natures?

Thirdly, Pokemon like Umbreon who need both their defenses do better off with HP EVs. Putting an EV into HP is like putting an EV into both defenses at the same time.

I would say defence over HP anyday....

I mean if you have no defence, that HP is EASY to knock off =p so it really is a better idea to have a high defence IMO.

General guideline is to raise Def/SpDef unless it's around half your HP. Which is when it comes to stuff like Blissey, Defence is maxed cos of naturally high HP, and stuff like Dusclops get max HP cos of naturally high Def/SpDef stats.

If a pokemon's Base Def+Base SDef > Base HP, then yes, HP is more important than the defenses, like in this case.
