2nd Gen Is it necessary to go through Team Rockets Layer in Pokemon Gold?

Hi folks. I currently have Pokemon Gold for Game Boy Color. I am on my way to the 2nd last gym, and in a walk through via you tube it shows going through Team Rockets layer before the gym. Now is it necessary to go through the layer or can I ignore it and go directly to the gym? Thanks in advance.

It is necessary. Do you see the guy blocking the east path out of Mahogany Town? He does not go away until after you beat Team Rocket at the radio tower. Team Rocket does not appear at the radio tower until you beat them at their hideout. Also, Lance gives you Whirlpool when you're in the hideout, so you'd have to go through there anyway.
