Is it possible to add a third gender option in HMA?

    Hello romhackers! I'm new to the romhacking scene, and I'm working on a Pokemon romhack using hex maniac advance to edit my rom. I was wondering if it is possible to add more gender options when you are prompted to select boy or girl at the start of the game. I have many non-binary friends who I feel would greatly appreciate this as an option while playing through the game. Is this something that is only reasonably possible for fangames, or can this be done in a romhack? If you have any information or coding solutions, I'd greatly appreciate it!
     
    Update: I have switched to developing a fangame, as I find it much easier to understand my own code, not written in assembly. If anyone does come up with a solution, or if i can get help with assembly and learn it a bit better, then I may come back to romhacking eventually. Unfortunately, this is beyond the scope of my technical capabilities rn, but if anyone can help, I'm sure it would be able to help more competent rom hackers.
