https://arcadespot.com/game/pokemon-x-and-y/ Google search now says it is a Pokemon Emerald hack but I didn't get that info the first time round and this game is broken. This game is broken- they replaced Firey Road and it requires you to a gym badge that you need to place through Firey Road to get. Granite Cave is also broken by modification- they put on more weak tile to stop you enterring the interior. The modder also straight out broke Slateport Battle Tent. So I access an online or direct ROM and it doesn't say its a modification- is there a quick way to spot if it is? So I can stop my son from starting playing a possibly broken game.

You mean a way to see if it is a modification of a particular version of a hack? If you have at least two different ips files, one of the broken version and one of the other one you are hoping isn't broken, you can compare them and see if they are different, such as different file size. If it is a pure rom (not an ips) and you have two roms, creating an ips patch from one rom base will tell you if there are any actual differences to patch.

For a played online version, it would depend entirely on the website to provide you with details.
