"Island of the Giant Pokémon" Episode Discussion

Didn't they have a Zapdos robot in this episode? What was with that?

It was a nice episode overall. The pokémon having an episode for them was a plus.

The Slowbro bartender was really cool too.

Hmmm...it was alright. Ekans going on about "no Pokemon are bad, only masters" is probably just what he thinks rather than truth. When I rewatched this episode a while ago I thought "haha the Pokemon are drunk" I went to Dogasu's page and I think he said they were?

lol Giovanni has a theme park. I wonder what ride he likes best? XD

Well, apparently, the bad grammar was dub-only.

He hasn't reformatted it yet, so enjoy it while you can.

I really, really enjoyed this one, as we never get the "true" POV of the little critters (remember, this is before the advent of the movie shorts). Actually, I thought it apt for the episode synopsis, but, in retrospect, the Pokemon and Trainer separation was the real plot, so, yeah. So, I re-watched this episode to death, as I did with the St. Anne one. A great ending, and proof the writers can succeed, if they put in the effort.

I'd say Giovanni would like the MechaMew2, but it hasn't been invented, yet. Hee.

This was a great episode, featuring the pokes as the main characters was great. Slowbro is amazing. Drunk Pokemon... Gotta Drink it all! SakeMon! Sorry! got off topic for a sec....

For the main characters, I loved it when Giovanni chewed out J&J for reciting their motto. This episode ranks as one of my favorite (now I have to my VHS tape with it on it). 10.5/10

OH! This is the episode where Team Rocket recite the motto to Giovanni!? I *love* that scene, me and my brother laughed for ages because

Jessie calls Giovanni collect - TR recite the motto - Giovanni hangs up. Giovanni PAYED to listen to the motto XD

This has a lot of edits. Too much for my tastes, but it wasn't bad. a Slowpoke was pretty random. 4Kids corrected the Japanese, congratulations.

Rating: 7.5/10 for all of the edits.

I don't know what's so amusing -- their dramatics blowing their chance for help or his blustery reaction? It was quite nice.

Still, he still has that digital distorted effect, even on a phone. Man, paranoid, much? Heh.

Probably the motto music sounding like it was coming from the phone, even though we were on JJM's side of the line XD No, Gio paying to hear the company motto, definatly XD

Yeah, I wondered where that music came from, as he did hear it on the phone. Hidden tape recorder? Heh.

You know, I thought that voice was actually his true voice thanks to that.

Also, didn't he sound very similar to Andross in that scene? I mean, maybe I'm overthinking it, but he did sound quite similar to him (I mean, the deep, digital-esque voice did sound somewhat similar to him, especially in his Star Fox 64 incarnation)

And, actually, for some strange reason, I thought that "Pokemon Land" was actually a secret (ie, illegal and covert) military base/weapons testing bed designed for Team Rocket use, and not a theme park. I mean, the mere fact that the vast majority, if not ALL of the supposed "Theme Park Mechs" seemed to be actually trying to KILL the main characters (both the heroes and villains), as well as their pokemon [especially evident with Zapdos, Moltres, Blastoise, and Charizard, as it was almost obvious that they were targeting them. though the others are debatable), rather than merely strolling along and they just so happened to be in the way, not to mention that Team Rocket, if not directly created the nightmarish island, definitely had a hand in creating in it. Giovanni was visibly upset at it's destruction, and I don't think it would have upset him AS much, if at all, if it was merely just a cover to his plot, (the weapons bed, I mean). This seemed to directly tie in to his plot to conquer Pokeria (In case you guys are wondering, that's my name for the Pokemon World, and I got the name by combining Pokemon and Corneria.).

Anyways, for the episode itself, pretty good. One thing I do wish, however, is that they explain the fate of Mecha-Moltres and Mecha-Rhydon (since it was implied that they were also destroyed due to Giovanni's exclaimation of "What?! Pokemon Land's been completely destroyed!?", yet they weren't even PRESENT when the Zapdos, Kabutops, Pikachu, Charizard, Venusaur, and Blastoise Mechanaloids were destroyed.). I mean, yeah, I did write a fan-deleted-scene explaining that plothole, but I think they needed to actually make an OFFICIAL explaination in regards to it, as my Fanfic wouldn't be close to official.

Well, since I mentioned this fan-deleted-scene, I figured I should show the link to it as well... (BTW, I also included Ariel in this [yeah, I know, I like to make super-verses.].), If you want to read it, fine. If not, well, that's fine as well.

Anyways, that's all for now.

At the time, it was certainly possible. That was the fun of the Boss Rocket's mystery.

That reminds me. To those with access to the Japanese audio feed, did Sakaki sound normal in this one? His previous episode, I understood the audio distortion, as he was on a video screen, so there's some dramatic license to play with, there. Dogasu never quite elaborate on the audio issue, so I'm curious if this is dub-only (I believe it is). I may chat in depth about the issue in the St. Anne discussion, since that's where it began.

Anyway, I need to check on your Andross contention (particularly in timing, as I forget Fox 64 was released), but the parallel is possible. Or, it's one heck of a coincidence.

You thought all that on P-Land? Heh. I did not, though, his owning P-Land made sense, as owning a park for Pokemon enthusiasts is good cover or a legitimate source of income, which he can use for Team Rocket. Gee, wonder how he'd react if he found out that Jessie and James were partly responsible for the park's destruction? Oops.

Yeah, I noticed how the other mechas weren't wrecked, but with everything going on (the reunion, dragging in the other mechas, etc), I just assumed the writers forgot to add it in.

I'd forgotten about Rhydon. To be honest I dont think the Moltres could have been a mecha because it would be to expensive for Giovanni to invent a mecha that has flaming wings and breathed fire. Plus, Moltres was the appropriate size so it probably was a real Moltres that trying to fry J&J.

Who knows, it was a filler episode to link the SS Anne plot to the Porta Vista Arc.

Hey, maybe he'll clarify this when he does the comparison.

Well, if you can, try and download it from Virtual Console on the Wii. For a good point to listen to Andross (I mean, without fighting him), I know that he actually attempts to hack into your comm. device about... ohh, nearly halfway through Area 6 [note, in the Japanese version of the game, I hear that he's actually has a much, much deeper voice, and sounds more scarier.].

Meh, we have differing opinions, but the way that some of the mechanoids were acting made it seem as though they actually WERE attempting to kill them to me. I mean, Charizard nearly disintegrated Ash, Misty, and Brock [or at best scorched them to charcoal [yeah, yeah, i know, it's a bad pun that I didn't intend.], Blastoise actually attempted to spray a dangerously high amount of water onto the pokemon castaways [I mean, we know it heard Squirtle's attempts to communicate to it [it turned it's head slightly, as if it heard it], and when Squirtle, partly out of fear, said a typically friendly compliment instead of just trying to ask it if it seen a group of humans in the midst, and yet, despite that, it STILL tried to make them drown/explode from shooting two huge beams of water.], Zapdos seemed to be trying to electrocute Ash, Misty, and Brock [it was discharging energy bolts, which they were clearly running from.], and Moltres was spraying flames at Jessie and James. Heck, Rhydon apparantly heard Meowth shouting, and then started to try and trample the little lost pokemon into road-kill after hearing them. That's not even counting what Kabutops and Pikachu trying to chase them or the giant evos chasing the pokemon castaways in the climax while nearly being trampled.

also, maybe it was for a legitimate source of income, but then again, it can just as easily be a front for the weapons bed, as well as testing said weapons on unfortunate people on the island (heh, now I'm starting to make it sound like "Metal Gear"). I mean, in the Time-splitters series (notably Time-splitters 2), the main villain of the game, Ernesto Diaz, was attempting to use his launching an array of seemingly harmless entertainment satellites into space (codenamed "Starline Network") as a front for him to launch a Nuclear Satellite into space [presumably for global domination].

Yeah, I noticed how the other mechas weren't wrecked, but with everything going on (the reunion, dragging in the other mechas, etc), I just assumed the writers forgot to add it in.

Yeah, I mean, the closest to an official explaination was with the Junior novelization of Island of the Giant Pokemon, which, even then, most people don't exactly count the Junior novelizations as canon to the franchise [in fact, some label them as "authorized fanfiction"], and even IF they were canon, it still neglected to mention Mecha Moltres' fate.

@Sir Boulevard: yeah, I know it was of the right size, but, then again, Zapdos was technically of the right size as well, and yet it still was a mechanical pokemon (Presumably a weapon, considering how it was attacking the characters), so it can be safely assumed that it was mechanical as well. Besides, Mecha-Charizard had some flames on its tail and breathed fire as well, and it was DEFINITELY a mechanical pokemon. If Giovanni had enough money to create a mechanical Charizard despite the fact that it had a flaming tail, I think he would have enough money to create a giant Moltres.

1. Well, he didn't bring it up for the St. Anne comparison, so that's why I wondered.

2. Don't have Wii (don't want it), but I do have Starfox 64 itself. How's that work out for you? Haha.

3. You may be right, as P-Land was never explained in depth (it would be referenced one more time in the future). So, that just fuels the fans' imaginations. Heck, if someone said to me in 1998 that Mewtwo would be created by Giovanni in the anime, I would have said, "are you nuts?" Though, I wouldn't have ruled it out, for reasons I'll explain in the appropriate forum.

4. I don't mind the Junior adaptations, as they can be useful in filling in the gaps (like the Battle of the Badge one). Is it canon? Nah, but how much do I regard the Pokemon anime as canon to the video game? Heh. So, around and around we go.

sirboulevard: I don't count this as filler, per se. Granted, no game canon or captures happened, but it concluded what happened to the cast after the turmoil in the St. Anne episode, thus resolving the plot. So, yeah.
