3rd Gen Item count in Emerald x?3

So I purchased a Genuine Australian (AGB-BPEP-AUS) cartridge of Pokemon Emerald, and the game already had a game saved on it when I put it in my SP.

This saved game has all pokeballs and variants, with x?<number> i.e.

Master Ball x?1
Great Ball x?3
Safari Ball x?8

Before I clear the saved game to start again, does anyone know how they would have got more than x99 in the first place? The item count goes over 256, and I'm assuming up to 65535.

Seeing as how the numbers are messed up, and that Safari Balls aren't normally available by regular means, my best guess would be that whoever owned the cartridge before you was using a Gameshark/Action Replay to add items like that to your bag.

Use Gameshark or codes to cheat... That's what i usually do if i want to catch legendaries such as Jirachi

I think some Gameshark devices can do that. But it shouldn't affect your cartridge when you restart the game :)
