Hey there, I have a question that I could not solve myself regarding IV Breeding in Pokémon XY/ORAS.

I have a 6IV Ditto in my Day Care that is holding a Destiny Knot. Bulbapedia says that Destiny Knot guarantees at least 5 IVs to be passed down from the parent holding it. I thought this would mean getting 5IV babies when breeding any Pokémon with that Ditto.

However, my eggs normally have 2-4 perfect IVs and so far I haven't seen one with 5 perfect IVs yet.

So what am I doing wrong? Am I overlooking something very simple?
    Thanks in advance.

A Destiny Knot passes down 5 IVs from either parent, not just the one holding it, which I think is where your confusion lies.

For example, if you had a 31/31/31/31/31/31 Ditto and a, say, 0/5/10/15/20/15 Pokemon to breed with it (please, feel free to admire the creativity of my number choice), it would get 5 IVs from both parents, total, so if you were very lucky you could get a 31/31/31/31/31/xx (or some other combination) Pokemon; likewise, if you were very unlucky you could end up with a 0/5/10/15/20/xx Pokemon. Chances are you'd end up with some random mix of the two, though.

Does that help clear things up?

It does. Thanks so much, because I thought I broke my game or something. ;)

Well, I guess it would be too easy to breed awesome Pokémon if you just had a 6IV one. No problem though, I'm not too far into the competitive stuff so I don't really mind.

Anyway, thanks again for helping me out.

Either way, you're just one or two stages off from 5-6IV Pokemon.

Every new generation you hatch will be progressively better than the previous. Just take whatever hatched, give it the old incest treatment with the 6IV Ditto, take whatever hatched from there, breed that with the Ditto.

For me it takes one or two generations until I have at least a 5IV Pokemon to work with.

A much harder task would be to get the 5-6IV Pokemon with the right nature and the right ability. And gender, too, if you have a preference.

My current mission is a long one: shiny male 6IV Protean Timid Froakie. I give it a shot every once in a while.
