Well, just today, I was talking to my friend about my new PokeTeam, I had started on Diamond. I traded a few over from my brothers game... so a few arn't very familiar to the Sinnoh Region.

But, he was talking to me about EVs and IVs (I get the general point about them), and I said "Can you see if mine are any good?".

I showed them to him, and he responded with...

    "...
where did you get that Skarmory....."

I told him I bred it. And then, he tells me how good it is with perfect IVs (31 or something) and has a one in 3 billion chance of getting one. Or whatever.

But I wanna know from you guys what exactly does this really mean... I'll show you the stats. It's legit. And I just used it at the start of the game to... the second gym.

    (Level 19, Brave)

    HP: 59
    Attack: 41
    Defence: 60
    Special Attack: 25
    Special Defence: 36
    Speed: 34

Is this much difference to what you would get? Is it any good? I'm just kinda confused.

EDIT: The level was 19, not 18

Gahh! its got perfect IVs!! How did you manage that?

Can you tell us its exact IV's in each stat, please?

You lucky bastard. I hope you train that up right. XDDD!!

Wait, 31 in every stat? Or 31 in those that count? I'm misreading.

To answer your question, Maddy, "Perfect IVs" basically means that your Skarmory's Individual Values, certain hidden statistics for each stat, are as powerful as any Skarmory can get, as long as you train it up right. Its nature is kinda lacking, but then again, Skarmory doesn't need Attack or Speed; it's a physical wall. HP and Defense EVs, I'd say. Since you've given it random EVs by using it in-game, use the EV berries to shoo away the EVs for the stats it doesn't need.

How can you tell? I don't understand IV's at all yet either... Would anyone be willing to tell me about my pokemon's IV's if I PM their stats?

hmm, you dont mention how many evs it gained. if you dont put in evs into the calculator you will get a completely inaccurate answer.

I don't remember much about IV's either, except for the fact that it has something to do with getting a shiny Pokemon also. I DO, however, have perfect understanding of EV's. You're lucky for that Skarmory, train it against constant Gastrodon for HP. For Defense, train it against Steelix. Pokemon with magnet pull recommended. Fight about 64 of Gastrodon and Steelix and HP and Defense should sky-rocket to 319-376(or around there) by the time you get to lvl. 100

    What are IVs and EVs?

    I'm sorry, I don't know much.

Lucky Maddy, btw. It seems you have a golden pokemon. :P

IV's are inividual values, which are based upon preset stats of pokemon that you get in the game(at level one usually)
In the starter pokemon's case(at lvl. 5) they are different and preset towards level five. Such as GSC, why did you get the RED Gyarados? Because it had preset values. Each nature has a value, I don't know the order, so I'll PM you later about it, but I DO know that Quirky nature(neutral) has an IV of 25.

EV's are effort values, simply because it requires MAJOR effort to require these values. okay...READ CAREFULY...the TRUE way to explain this can take up to 8 paragraphs....

Okay...each pokemon has a dominant stat out of all, example, Zubat has a dominant SPEED stat, because of this it will give you one EV point to YOUR pokemon that defeated it! Don't get happy just yet...EV training is just like Zelda, four heart pieces is an extra container to your total amount of hearts...right? Okay so basically you defeat 4 Zubats...now, when you next gain a level, it will be +2 SPEED instead of one.

I will keep explaining it until you get it right...I'm very patient...unlike most who would spit in your face next time you ask then say: you're a noob.

Wow, thank you for the thought-out post. It's helped me quite a bit.

Perhaps we can chat somehow, like AIM or MSN messenger?

Whoaaa... HANG ON! I actually was a level out... Level 19. So the EVs might be wrong. I gave it to my friend to EV Train. He said he knows a way to reset it's EVs, I think. Some long and complicated process.
He also said it was impossible because it's Mum, a Ditto, had the crapiest IVs ever.... It's dad was alright though.

Can you tell us its exact IV's in each stat, please?
31 in all of them, I think he said.

You lucky bastard. I hope you train that up right. XDDD!!
Lol, yesh. My friend's EVing it. So me ist lucky.

31 in all of them, is what he said.

There's an IV caluculator on Serebii, i believe. Just google "Serebii IV Calculator"

Um... well. I'm not sure. But... it's only level 19 and I've used it up to the second gym.

    I hope :3. There's a guide on Seebii. Have a looksie there.

Are you sure it's at the right level? It appears that it has pretty good attack and defense, but others are invalid stat.

    Jordan.
Well, the level was one off... So that may make a difference.

Geez! I just sprained my finger at school today, you've given it a real workout! V_V It kills.
