IVs, be my dictionary!

Ok, so, what are IVs? I know there kinda like natures i guess, you get them by breeding, and they effect secret power. (Or hidden power). And there's a way to check them i think.
I ask what are they? I'm starting emerald with a female treceko, so i thought I'd try to IV breed it or somthing, but I don't know what it is!

IV's are Individual Values. They're a hidden stat that determines how good each of your pokemon's stats will be. They range from 0 to 31, so ideally you'll want a poke with as many 31's as possible. A good description of IV's can be found at https://www.serebii.net/games/ivs.shtml
