Chapter 3: Post 1

Having successfully captured Hoothoot, Isis picked up the sphere, looked at it briefly and entered Cherrygrove City. She walked into the Pokémon Centre, had her partners healed by Nurse Joy and booked a room. The redhead then went upstairs to her room, got changed and went to bed.

The next day, she explored the wildlife of Cherrygrove, but found that none of the Pokémon were to her liking. From there, after buying 5 Poké Balls for twenty dollars, a Heal Ball for fifteen dollars and four Potions, she went north to Route 30 where she hoped to capture a Caterpie.

Hiding behind a cedar tree was a shadowy figure. He continued to observe the red-haired teen as he crept closer and closer.

"Vulpix!" the female Vulpix's cry was urgent, as her trainer heard a twig break and jerked herself around to be confronted by a man. Sporting black hair, he appeared to be of foreign descent. Snugly fitted on his face was a pair of black-rimmed reading glasses. He wore a long sleeved grey striped business shirt and blue denim shorts, with the whitest of white sandshoes covering his feet.

"Who are you?" Isis asked suspiciously. "And why are you stalking me?"

"Piix," Ruby uttered a drawn-out growl as she expressed her intense dislike for this man.

"My name not important to you," the man replied. "Neither is reason why I stalk you. But what you know anyway? You just young girl who not know anything."

Like hell your name is important! Isis thought angrily, as her hazel eyes widened to hear how disrespectfully the foreigner spoke to her.

"Ruby, Hoothoot – get ready!" the redhead instructed, still unable to think of a nickname for her latest addition. "How DARE you speak to me like that?! I'll have you know that I graduated second in my class and I could easily thrash you, you noob!" Having been insulted by the stranger, Isis was really riled up. One hand was in a clawing position, and the other had been thrust upon her hip.

<He's in for it now…> Ruby thought, tensing her muscles in readiness for battle. Refreshed as he was, Hoothoot burst out of the Poké Ball and took his place beside the female Vulpix.

"You two, it is go time!"

Both Pokémon stepped up next to their trainer, with Ruby having small fireballs shoot from her mouth as she bared her teeth.

"You want battle, hey?" the man taunted Isis, before releasing the only two Pokémon he possessed.

A flash of red energy revealed a bipedal, tapir-shaped creature with a lazy face and appearance. It waved its four fingered hands around in a circular motion, making the air distort slightly. The bottom half of its body, other than its toes, was black and the rest of it was golden.

The other Pokémon was a black dog-like being with a tan muzzle. It snapped and barked loudly, showing sharp white teeth with drool dripping from them. Upon seeing that its opponents were the diminutive Vulpix and Hoothoot, the Houndour prepared for a battle.

"The name Jin, by the way," the man finally publicized his name.

"A pleasure, I'm sure," Isis replied sarcastically.

"Get them!" Jin commanded his two Pokémon.

"Ruby, Hoothoot – Ember and Hypnosis!"

The female Vulpix ran towards the Drowzee and flames struck his flesh, while the male Hoothoot lunged at the Houndour, using an unusual hypnotic ray from his eyes to put the canine to sleep.

Drowzee's black eyes widened upon feeling Ruby's fireballs strike him and the Psychic type retaliated with a blue blast of mental energy that is the technique known as Confusion. The move sent the Fire type flying backwards, but her hind paws dug into the soil, which slowed her movements and prevented her from crashing into an oak tree.

"Hoothoot, tackle the Houndour and Ember Drowzee again, Ruby! Keep it up, you two! You're going great!" Isis congratulated her partners.

The redhead's two Pokémon swapped targets. As Ruby once again sent balls of fire towards the Psychic type, it caused the Pokémon to become winded. He staggered backwards, trying to get his breath back.

"Quick, Ruby! Perform the action of Bite on Drowzee!" the teen instructed, not wanting to lose the advantage she had.

The female Vulpix wasn't about to let that happen and she bit into the yellow and brown skin. A choked gasp came from Drowzee's mouth as the pain registered in his body. Having recovered from the earlier attack, Drowzee retaliated with a Pound. Ruby tried to dodge it, but she ended up taking a glancing blow. She responded by unleashing another 'Bite' on Drowzee, which proved to be the final straw for the Psychic type. He fainted in front of Ruby, his energy completely spent.

Working as a team, albeit Hoothoot was a bit unwilling, Ruby and the male Flying type now advanced on Houndour. The Dark type was proving to be particularly difficult in defeating.

Feinting to the left, Ruby was able to trick the fiery canine and she quickly lunged in from the right. She used Tackle on the Dark and Fire type once again, while Hoothoot madly performed the action of Peck on his opponent until his eyes rolled backwards in his head and he collapsed on his back.

"WHOOHOO!" Isis screamed happily. "I won!" she declared proudly.

Realizing Jin wouldn't give her any prize money, she continued a little way down the path. She stopped and looked back at him, as he was sitting on the side of the path, defeated. "Don't ever underestimate a Pokémon trainer on a mission," she said to him, feeling really proud of herself.

Walking further down the path a little bit, she stopped upon noticing a Pokémon crawl into her line of sight. It was a Caterpie and it was larger than the usual size. The green Pokémon had two large black eyes and a segmented body. Its underside, feet, mouth and tail were yellowish, and there were yellow circles framing its body. A pink antenna ending in two tips was on the top of its head and it looked strong as it aggressively showed off.

"That's a Caterpie!" Isis spoke softly while referring to her Pokédex. She flicked the device closed and glanced at the Caterpie, before turning to her Pokémon with a firm expression on her enthusiastic face. "We can't just leave it here. We should try and capture it."

The Caterpie heard Isis. Glaring at the Hoothoot indifferently as if to say <You aren't worth my time.>, it nevertheless straightened its posture, before lunging at the male Flying type.

"Hoothoot, use Tackle!" Isis instructed her Pokémon, but the male Flying type just sat there, a look of reluctance on his face. The bird was unwilling to harm his opponent as it was smaller than him.

<I will NOT harm that Caterpie, unless I'm absolutely forced to,> the normally nocturnal bird thought, looking pointedly at his trainer.

The silk quickly covered the male Hoothoot's face and the bird still stood in one place.

Caterpie was quick to attack and rushed straight at Hoothoot. Thanks to his stubbornness, the bird was hit.

<That hurt a bit,> the male flier grunted.

"Hoothoot, COME on! You're a Flying type, for crying out loud – Flying types are renowned for their agility. Do something! Otherwise, you're going to lose!"

Caterpie rushed at Hoothoot once more, but it missed. Tackle didn't have a one hundred percent accuracy rate.

Hoothoot managed to get the gooey silk off his face and lunged at Caterpie, pecking it around the neck area. A thin line of blood trickled down the green exoskeleton.

"Well done, Hoothoot. Now we're getting somewhere. Use Tackle!"

The Normal and Flying Pokémon had been determined not to attack, but now he had no choice. He tackled the worm Pokémon with the force of his body once more and then hopped backwards as Isis threw the sphere. It began wiggling from side to side.
