Joltys May edition sprite contest disscussion thread

I'm glad I'm not a judge! >_< I don't think I could choose a favorite... -_-; And I wouldn't really consider mine a contender either... I entered this and then didn't even look at it again until today. But now that I've had a chance to look at all the candidates, I wanna give my comments on each one! :D Btw, these are in the order they were submitted - not in my order of preference! =x

1. DarkPegasus' "Two-Face Umbreon"*
I liked this one because it reminded me of the two girls that serve Two-Face, from the Batman series! :D A good side and a bad side... hm... maybe that means it's a well-balanced Pogey! :P I did have a problem with the fact that it doesn't look very cohesive. What I mean by that is, well... the dark side doesn't seem to join with the light side. It seems as though they are just sitting next to one another, rather than coexisting as a single entity. And I think that it would be even better if you'd had the back left leg black as well as the front one. Otherwise it looks like only the front left quarter of his body is dark. ^_^

2. Ashley03's "Raigong"*
This one was really cool, but there something that struck me as odd. The tail really didn't seem to fit... maybe it's just me. Anyway, I did like the way it looked with those colors. And the grey hair on his head was a nice touch! :D

3. jhgghyu's "Buxom Magma Babe"*
This one made me really look at it closely. I spent over half a minute trying to figure out what it was that she had attached to her chest. Then it occurred to me that perhaps you were trying to give her a bit of a boob job, lol. Anyway, the design itself is good, but the head and the chest could have been melded onto the body a little more believably. In particular, I think that the hair on her head should have been altered a little on the right side to compensate for her arm, and the chest really didn't need to be so big... nor so rectangular, lol.

4. Dawson's "Tucallee"
The design for this character was awesome! It looked like a cross between a puffin and a seagull, with a little blue in for good measure. I loved this one a lot, but if I had to choose one part to pick at, it would be that it looks kind of flat... I think that with some deeper shades in strategic areas, you could give it a much more 3D appearance. But really, that's only a minor thing, lol.

5. Halo's "Umbreon Pokemorph"
This one was really striking! You took the sinister, dark side of team Magma, and coupled it with the dark beauty of Umbreon, and this was the result. I think that the extra details you added to the clothing were splendid, and the coloration of his eyes and skin were awesome. The only problems I have with it are minor ones, but I'll say them anyway. His tail really looks out of place. If it had been me, I'd have left out the tail altogether. Or instead of putting it straight up like that, maybe you could have tried letting it dangle behind him. :) And his wrist plates add an odd touch to him; they remind me of the leg poofs on a black french poodle. Anyway, overall, it was one of my favorites. :)

6. Latias Lover!'s "Mewicune"*
The coloration of this one was awesome. Mew in this color would be one of my favorite Pokemon, that's for sure. But there was something about this one that ruined it for me. The fact is, I think you've got too much going on up near his head. In addition to his flared tail, he's now got Suicune's headplate, as well as the streamers, and they're all up there at the top, crowding out his face. I think it really upsets the beauty of this Pokemon, and it could have been much better if you'd positioned the tail elsewhere, and let the streamers fly out in another direction too. Give us a chance to see his majestic face! Anyway, that's all I have to say about that. It was a great effort, but I just wasn't too thrilled by it. :/

7. Pikabloo's Fusion
When I wrote these reviews, I couldn't view your image for some reason. If it shows up later, I'll come back and edit this.

8. Shuko's "Flannery Mermaid" -_-;
Well, since I was criticizing others' sprites, I thought it was only fair that I do the same to my own. Gawd, I hate talking about what I like and don't like on my own sprites! Anyway, first of all, I'll start with what I like. I like the way I pulled off the coloring and the highlights. She looks really smooth and shiny on her tail and... er... boobies, lol - which is what I was going for. But what I don't like is that I used the original face and arms (or at least the shape of the arms) for her upper half. I could have made a better pose up there, but I ended up getting lazy. Anyway, that's that. On to the others!

9. B.Coen's "Impling"
I liked the way he did a Pokedex entry for this one. The base color for this Pogey was a good choice, and the color for the mouth and the pads on the feet was also a good choice, because since yellow is opposite purple on the color wheel, they go surprisingly well together. There were a few noticeable flaws on this one, though. His wings weren't defined well enough to show what they were. You had to look really closely to see that they were actually wings. And for some reason, his mouth looks smudged into his left wing on that side. Another problem with his left side is that his leg is placed in an odd position. It makes his body look weirdly twisted, and really makes his gait seem off-kilter. But the shading lent to this as well, so it wasn't just the placement of the leg that made things odd. All in all, this was a good idea, but I think it could have been done much better. Another try or two and you could probably make him a really believable pokemon. :)

10. Tendo's "Ninja Girl"
I loved her. :3 She had an air of mystery about her, brought on by that stupid teasing face mask she's wearing (I wanna see her face, darnit! XD), and her pose is really very intimidating. The character design seems reminiscent of Naruto, and since I'm a huge fan, I'd naturally luv that part too. :P As far as bad stuff goes, I had a hard time coming up with any. So instead, I'll try a few suggestions. How about giving her just a touch more highlight up there on her bangs, or on top of her head? And I mean with a light grey to a light blue - not just the dark grey you're already using. The only other thing is that, with the slightly off-vertical positions of her legs and arms, the pixelation really shows up. Perhaps you could gradient (is that a verb? 0_o) the outlines on her limbs just a bit, and see if softening those edges would make them seem less jagged. But I don't know if that would work or not. Likely you've already tried that. This was another one I really liked. Definitely in my top five. :P

11. Yami_Zidane's "Count Brawly"*
The design for this one, although seemingly simple, was an awesome idea. I never realized how much like a demon/vampire Brawly could look, but you really convinced me. Like Tendo's, I had a hard time coming up with too many things to criticize, but I'll list the ones I did find. First off, the wings seem to be sticking out of his shoulders. I think it would be more believable if you'd attached them around his shoulderblades instead - like maybe five or six pixels inward on either side. But I could be wrong. I just think that they'd look more... er... natural that way, lol. Second was his coat. The inner lining was perfect, but the way the coat was shaped seemed just too perfectly curved. It didn't really seem to have the kind of weight of any fabric. If it was supposed to be flapping upwards a little from some kind of unseen power, it ought to have some folds or ripples in it. But understand, drawing clothing and fabric is very hard. So don't feel too bad about my mentioning this. Really, I was digging the bottom of the barrel to find anything at all, lol.

12. armadilloHD's Dragoon spritesheet
Naturally, your wide range of poses and expressions is very impressive. I can tell that you've been working on this sprite for a long while now. :) It would be really neat to see this little guy in action, lol. Now, as far as criticism goes, I think that what needs work the most is this guys props. His cloak, as well as his spear and spear tornado are really lacking in detail. They just don't have the quality that the rest of your sprites do. But since you've been working on him for some time now, I would imagine that he's still kind of a work in progress. I hope you get him perfect in your own eyes. That's what will count the most. :)

13. Nintales_001's "Darkwing Eon"*
This one is very beautiful! The face is adorable, and the wings look very good on it. However, the shading could have been a lot more consistent. and for some reason, that bright patch of hair on the side of his face looks strange poking into the wing like that. :P Plus, the tail would probably be better placed where it isn't hidden by the wings. Maybe in a graceful "S" shape out behind? But overall, it really was very pretty. You also get a cookie. ;)

14. Sapphire_Dragon's "Wolfua"
At first I thought it was an ice form of Eevee. But then I saw that it was just its own species. ^_~ As far as scratches go, it's pretty good. The legs look like they came off a Vaporeon, but other than that, it's all pretty original. I like how the tailfin and the ears look like they have icicles hanging off them. And the eyes are uber cute! ^^; There are really only a few things I can find "wrong" with it. First off, the position of the back legs make it look strange... I guess what I mean is that it looks like they're bracing the back end for something. I'm not sure what that would be... -_-; And I'm sure you didn't mean that, so I'll chalk it up to my impression. Also, I think his body could have benefitted from more of those white dots. Granted, I'm pretty sure that you intended it as a highlight, rather than a marking. But it looked more like a spot to me, and I think your pokemon would look really good with more of them. That's really more of a suggestion, lol. Nice fakemon. ^_~

15. may_flower141's "Flower Child"*
Oh yeah... How could I forget this one? I hate to say this, because it's really almost petty on my part, but this one makes me sad. I'd better explain. You see, I thought at first that this one was my second favorite, next to the Plant Goddess. But unfortunately, I noticed a flaw in this one that just ruined it for me, and now I can't look at it the same way. The thing is, look at the arms. The right one (her right) is way too short (even when you take perspective into account) and the left one is way too long. The pose would be fine, except for that. And although the coloring and outlining is far from perfect, the originality of it, and the bright, colorful design make it very pretty. I just hate that I have to admit my own biases. ;_; Sorry, but I had to be honest.

16. Jebus' "Baby Eevee"
Very cute! ^^ I love the way you added Eevee's facial features and tail to a Teddiursa body. It's really cute. There are noticeable flaws in the design, but they can almost be overlooked because of its overall cuteness. However, I will mention some of them. First and foremost, you shouldn't have blown it up like that. Make sure that when you submit a sprite, it's the same size as an original would be. It's pretty clear that you made a sprite, then stretched it out to make it bigger. A good rule of thumb with sprites is that the bigger you make it, the less pretty it's going to be. Next time make sure you pay close attention to the contest rules, okay? ^^; Second, we can't really see his little feet, given the detail you've provided. Don't be afraid to draw in features you can't copy from sprites. You only have a small area to work with. Test 'em out and tweak 'em until they look good. That's what I do. :) Nice sprite.

17. Darts' "Shadow Lugia"
I loved the pose on this one, and I loved the coloring, all except for one thing. The outline really doesn't fit. You ought to make it darker, otherwise it just doesn't fit the character itself. Straight black won't work, naturally, but a blending of black and dark, dark blue would do the trick. You've also worked on this one a couple of times; I know; I've seen your posts. ;) Keep at it. You've got a wicked base to work off of.

18. Rayquaza_and_Deoxys' "Tro-oh" Fusion
A very good fusion, if I do say so. The coloring was a very good choice; you put the green where it would be most effective, and the yellow tail was a good idea, as was the head feathers. They took the place of Tropius' banana thingies, lol. The only bad thing I see is that its head is bent at a very painful-looking angle. I think if you had found a way to rotate it a little, or maybe even extended the neck and made an "S" curve, it would have been worlds better. But overall, it was a lovely sprite. Good job!

19. Spiro's "Elite 4 Anubis"*
I loved this idea! I can't believe I've not seen more of these kinds of things, considering what huge hits "The Mummy" and "The Mummy Returns" were, lol. I think that your blend was very good, although the highlights on the chest looked a little off. The coloration overall was very pleasing, though. I love how you took Bruno's body and put Anubis' head on him. That was the kicker for me! XD Another one that made it to my top five. :D

20. mintybobo's "Darth Skull Champ"*
Another great crossover idea! I liked the Duskull head on the Machamp body. XD That was freakin' hilarious! But the multicolor light sabres were kind of fruity... and the shading on his body could have been much better. Plus, the detail from the light sabre's was sorely lacking. You should have made the inner portion of the blade a lighter color (it would have given it the appearance of a glowing beam, rather than a single-colored stick) Also, the thumbs didn't wrap around the handles at all. You should have modded the machamp sprite's hands to look like they were holding the sabres. It would have really made the effect work. But it was definitely a good effort. You deserve a cookie!

21. The Queen of Spades' "Pyro"
Lol. When I first saw this, I thought it was a flamin' Ghostbuster! XD But when I searched for a pic of Pyro on Google I saw what you meant. This was a good idea overall. The colors were perfect, right down to the details. The only bad thing was the outline. It could have been a little better defined, but other than that, I couldn't find anything wrong with it. Another good job!

22. jean202's "Fire Starter Medley"*
I liked the way you took something from each of the Fire-type starting Pokemon's final evolutions (Charizard, Typhlosion, and Blaziken) and put it on one Pokemon, using Typhlosion as the base. It was a good choice. He looks veeerrry intimidating, lol. Unfortunately though, your outline wasn't too well-defined. If you'd made it a little darker, it would be perfect. But I loved the shading, and I loved the design. Another of my top five favorites, lol. :P

23. Raven's Phoenix's "The Plant Goddess"
Squee!!! So pretty! Honestly, I can't find a single thing wrong with this beauty. She's so darned perfect, I hope she wins. :P Naturally, this one is one of my ultimate faves. If I had to vote for only one, I think it would be this one.

24. Pikachu1125's "Team Tundra Trainer"
Since I haven't seen any other Team Tundra sprites, I don't have anything to reference it by, so I'll just go on my impression of the quality. I love it! It's a very nicely colored, well brought-together trainer sprite, and it looks like it could have come out of the video games. But I'm not quite sure what he's levitating... is that a beaker? Anyway, the only thing that rubbed me the wrong way about this one was the pose. It looks like he's about to eat the Pokeball, lol. Other than that, great sprite there, mate!

25. BlackCharizard's "Charquaza"
This one was colored beautifully. I realize it was probably an impulse to fashion it after the shiny Rayquaza, but instead, you chose your own color scheme and stuck to it. Good job! ^_^ The wings look a little off, though... I think its left wing is fine, but considering the position of the body, its right wing should be folded backward, so that it lines up more with the left one. But that may just be my own observation. I could be way off base on that one. :/ I didn't really like the way the flame was shooting out of the tail. It made it look like a rocket booster, rather than a simple flame. And to me, that denotes gas, lol. I hate that. Maybe I'm just dirty-minded. :P But overall, a very nice sprite. Good job!

26. Iron Spriter Josh's "Scizo-cuno"*
Simply beautiful. The softened tones make it very graceful-looking, which is surprising, considering how abruptly Scizor always struck me. The positioning of articuno's facial features, wings, and tail were flawless. And the coloring was awesome. Seriously, dude, you did a wonderful job. Can't say anything bad about it. Definitely a top-fiver!

27. DeoxysOwns22's "Umbrelava"
Too bad you didn't make it into the contest. :/ But I'll go ahead and review it anyway. I like the way it still has the ferret-like appearance of Quilava, but the ears and rings really pull it off. I don't know if Quilava's feet were already like that, but for some reason, its legs look splayed out in an awkward position. He looks like bambi before he slips and falls on the ice, lol. :P Good job on the shading, and beautiful facial expression. Definitely a contender.

*I took liberties and assigned a name when I couldn't find one. :P

Edit: I just saw that I had six top-fivers, lol! XD
Edit 2: I added in the ones I forgot. :embarrass

Wow Shuko, that was a lot. Thanks for taking the time to do all that. I know everyone appreciates it. =D

That's a sprite I edit a lot, which is probably why I like it so much, it's always fresh. It's funny you suggested the hair thing, because that's always the 1st thing I change when editting that sprite. This time I went for white hair. You can barely see the white hair with the white BG, but I don't mind. Just take some dark gray & fill in the BG with it. =P

Wow, I got third place in Shuko's opinion. I thought the sprite was so crappily done that it wouldn't make anything above 28.

Naw, that's just on #3 because you were the third person to submit a sprite. ^_~ You did a pretty good job, but I'm not tellin' anyone exactly who got what (except the one that was mah favorite! :classic: ) I don't think placement is all that important anyway. Contests like this are supposed to inspire you to create something beautiful. So if we get beauty as a result, it's all worthwhile. ^_~

I tried...I'm not very good with trainer sprites. I'm better with Pokemon blends and recolours...

That's okay. ^_^ Attempting things you think you aren't so hot at only makes you a bolder person. It takes guts to keep plowing on through there when you've had a bad track record in the past. And besides, the old saying "practice makes perfect" has a good bit of say in this too. If you wanna do nice trainer sprites, you ought to spend some time working on them. It'll show; don't worry. But if you really prefer doing Pokemon ones, and being able to do good trainer sprites isn't worth the hassle to you, then meh, don't worry about it. You make whatever you want to make. It's your own artistic license. Use it how you see fit. ^_~

Thanks. I didn't enter my Poke-sprites, though, because they're deliriously blurry...
