All right, well, I'm a pokenerd like all of you here. Every so often, I get the urge to play a handheld Pokemon title. But the problem is, all the game's formulas are the exact same:
    - Catch a bunch of Pokemon and train your favorite 6
    - Defeat the Elite Four
    - Complete the Pokedex

So, this thread isn't about all our theories about how Gamefreak can improve the game mechanics and bring the spark back to playing, because they really haven't lost a significant fanbase, especially with the release of HGSS right around the corner.

But, my question is, does anyone know interesting little challenges to set yourself when playing Pokemon games? To like, enhance the gameplay.

And yes, I've heard of Mono[type/species] Challenges and Play, Power, Pass. I'm trying to get a big collaboration of fun little ideas to then turn into a set of rules to play by and have some original fun in the games.

So if you guys could help me out, it'd be greatly appreciated. :3

Wait, what makes you think we like Pokemon? :P kiddin'

Well what I usually do to make it a little more challenging is pretend I'm a trainer like Ash, as in not evolving all my Pokemon.
I suppose you could try going through the game with only first evolutions?

You could try a time trial thing where you try and go through the game as fast as you can?
Maybe going through it with just one Pokemon?
Go through it using Pokemon you've never used before?
Go through it only using Pokemon that someone from the anime used? For example using only ashes current pokemon team? Or his Kanto team or something?

Can't really think of many others right now but I'm sure other people will have plenty of ideas :D

You could try what I call a "Restricted-Type Run."

Basically, you choose a type at the beginning of the game, just like in a Mono-Type Run, and use only that type until you beat the first Gym.
Then you can use the Type that the Gym uses as well as the first type.
When you beat the next Gym, you add the Type of THAT Gym to your list of usable Types... And so on.

By the time you get to the Elite Four, you can use almost every Pokemon that you can find, but it will take you a while to train new team members at that point in the game...

I've actually already done most of those things. Except for all the anime-related ones cause I don't really follow it. :P Although the not-evolving idea seems kind of interesting. I just don't like I'd have to press B every time they gain a level, or get a bunch of Everstones, haha.

see how long it takes you to go through with a useless pokemon.

I did a game with a caterpie. My god my Butterfee pwned up!

It is a very interesting thing to do.

That's actually really interesting. I might try that. Thanks :D

That's pretty smart! I think I might try that one as well. It'll take so much more training but hey whatever. :P

I traded with a guy earlier that just wanted 6 random eggs for his soul silver playthough. I thought that was a pretty interesting idea ... unless you got doubles or something. I'll have to ask him how it turned out, but it would be slightly harder I suppose.

I believe all of these are currently ongoing. About a year or so ago, I made a Mono-duo, type, and generation challenge for DP (Platinum wasn't here at the time, but hey, it could join in the mix now). Basically, you choose a type. Simple. Then a generation. Okay. Now, only two Pokemon. I had a lot of fun with it. I might could post it again?

But yeah. Scrambled egg challenge would be fun. Get someone you know to make you random eggs (ask for no doubles) and then trade them over to the game you're gonna play through it on. That'd be cool.

If any of you find this interesting, please check out the Project Alpha Fan (in the metal/color section, or click on the link in my sig). Bring glory to the Pokecommunity!

Here's one: You use a random word generator to come up with some word, and make your team revolve around it.

    Example: Inch
One way of doing this one is to use Pokemon that have a low base speed, i.e. Pokemon that "Inch" along.

    Example: Sticky
Use only Pokemon that can be considered "Sticky," like Ariados, Muk, etc.

    Example: Distorted
This is what I'm doing. I'm using Pokemon that are like real animals (or plants, in theory), but are changed enough that it's obvious that they aren't real.

You could always do a thing where you can't train a Pokemon more than five levels. So you have to keep catching new Pokemon all the time.

Although I do disagree with your idea of what everyone does so to get 6 Pokemon, beat elite 4, and pokedex.

I usually use a Pokemon unobtainable until much later in the game or from a different game, like playing through Platinum using Absol as my starter Pokemon.

You can also try to do many underground activities, master honey trees, or enter contests and make it to the top for the sweet building in Resort Area.

I also like scramble, but you can, instead of eggs, have people trade the Pokemon to you so they don't listen to you, for an extra challenge.

The only problem I could see with scrambled eggs is if they decide to be a dick and give you crappy Pokemon.

Honestly, I think they should make a game where you play for the bad-side (; I know, they;ve shot it down several times, but maybe one day they will realize that their teenagers and adults need a bit of extra fun?

Or, failing that, you could try to make every pokemon you own level 100! Try trading over GTS, and see what kind of odd level 100s you can get (I got a Cubine and Larvitar that no one expects to see at level 100)

Also, you could try doing the whole game never using fly or the bike, and running very little. Like if it was an actual person going through it, not a game spirit that doesn't need to eat or sleep.
