I've started getting notifications about likes received (since late August, although afaik I hadn't received any likes for a while before then) despite still having it set to 'no'.

Try turning the setting to yes and then turn it back off. It's entirely possible they started sending when the new notification system's various changes got rolled back to fix issues some other users were having a month or so ago, and the system just simply may not have rechecked people's notification settings.

Well, it was fixed, but not by that. Thanks anyway; I'm not sure I would've thought it can work that way.
Administration, when you make changes/fixes relevant to a curent thread reporting on that matter, could you say so in said thread?
Of course if you didn't do anything then never mind.
