Like yeah, I was thinking, as you are watching, new posts could refresh every 5 seconds (like on some other forumsthatshallnotbenamed) so the really REALLY active forums (Like OT) could cut down on the ninja'd-ness. I swear I got ninja'd three times in a row when I was posting something there.

So is it possible? Or is it not a good idea for a reason I haven't thought of?

That sounds like an incredibly huge strain on the server. Why not refresh the thread yourself before you're about to post?

    bad idea

Not only would this be a huge stress on the server as Vrai said, especially if a user has several threads or sections open at the same time, it's also annoying, especially to those on dial-up or other non-dedicated connections that can be disconnected willy-nilly (disconnect without setting your browser to "Work Offline", and then it will not be able to connect saying "cannot find server" when it comes time for auto-refresh, depending on the browser, it could also erase the page from the cache.)

Then again, it might be just me, but auto-refresh is really annoying, especially over slow connections.
