Bulbapedia makes this claim: A glitch in the early Japanese games Red and Green allowed players to transform their Magikarp into a Mew. However, this Mew was not registered in the Pokédex, did not have the same stats nor moves, and caused some major glitches to the player's items pack.

In the year since it's been up, no one has confirmed or denied this claim... And I can't find any sources outside Bulbapedia. What's the deal?

You haven't even found how to activate the glitch?

Well that's the whole point. I would like to know how the glitch works for research-purposes, but the Internet is being less than helpful in coming up with anything.

Well nobody knows dude why dont you go try some stuff and see if it works?

Off Topic:Why are you so mean to magikarps give magikarp a link!

True that. I couldn't even find anything on Google. Perhaps this is just the glitch that got away?

    Ehh Magikarp haters much?

On Topic:Im pretty sure that rumor/glitch faded away

    I've heard of this rumor.

From what I read at the time, you had to buy the Magikarp sold at Route 4's Pokemon Center. Then drop it off at the Daycare. (I'm assuming it should be untouched prior to this in order to work) Once it reaches level 50, retrieve it, and it will "evolve" into Mew.

Of course, when I read this, It diddn't say anything about Japanese-only games or altered stats.

Yeah, that was one of the "big three" Mew rumours back in the day... I'm really curious about this supposed glitch because, if true, it would be very important for my research and in term an interesting read for my article on the subject.

If the glitch is in any way similar to some of the methods rumoured here, we got ourselves a source.

    Mew from Magicarp

to get a magicarp to evolve into a mew, these are the steps based off this website: angelfire.com/yt/pokemaniac4/redblue.htmlf

I restarted my fire red recently, and I'm going to try this. I'll let you know if it works or not.

"Mew^You buy the Magicarp from the guy who tries to sell it to you, raise it (without rarecandies) until it learns Hyper Beam (learns this at Gyarados stage. See Easy Level Gain for hints on how to evolve Magicarp.), then use a rare candy and it will evolve into Mew."

EDIT::: i heard from another site you have to get the magicarp to lvl 50 but without letting it evolve to a Gyarados, then you have to give it a rare candy...

I read that there is a man in Mt Moon that sells you a Magikarp that evolves into Mew at level 50. Not sure if its true though.

I remember at one time there were like sooooo many rumors about how to get Mew back in the day. So many of them kind of run into each other.. I remember one rumor involved using cut on the tires of a truck on the dock near the ship.

I do also remember the glitch with Fly then walking down a certain route. I still have that one on one of my B/R/Y games...

I'll be curious to hear how your research goes, I'm tempted to help, but I don't want to restart any of my games right now...
