I've been playing pokemon since Blue but never really got into the competitive seen, though I've always found it entertaining. I finally decided to make a team but I need some help. What exactly makes a good team? I've seen many competitive teams and pokemon but I don't really know what's needed on a team.

What would also be helpful is if someone could suggest me Pokemon that compliment each other. There's some pokemon I'd love to include in my team just due to personal preference and it would be greatly appreciated if I could get suggestions on what to do next.

    Umbreon
    Heracross
    Azumarill

for Azumarill. max HP and attack. choice band or quick claw.
superpower play rough aque jet watefall.
at least that's how I build him. not to mention is on a rain team.
for Umbreon,I might be out of date, but I think he is a great wall with baton pass. double check on that.

When I first started out battling, I just used whatever pokemon countered popular threats. However, I now realize that having a specific goal in mind when creating a team works out a lot better. My teams built this way have been way more successful than my other ones, so I would recommend looking into what style of team you want. There's hyper-offensive, bulky offensive, phasing, and stall to name a few. I would warn heavily against using hyper-offensive because with the sixth generation, you have to have a defensive core. Otherwise, you can kiss your pokemon goodbye one by one. Just some things to think about. Once you have decided which direction to take your team, I'll be happy to help. I'm not the greatest at team building, but I think I'm somewhat decent at it, so I'll be doing my best.
