Making the rival's gender depend on the player's gender

I'm not sure if there is an easier way or not, but you will probably have to use Event Pages.

You're going to have to edit the Intro event to either turn on a variable or a Control Switch.

Then you just make your desired event. Use the Control Switch to determine which page is used. You can make changes to them accordingly, if you want to give them a different personality, for example.

The character graphics are independent from the other event pages, so you can do quite a lot with them.

I'm assuming you don't have to code anything in the control switch, since it's defined from the start.
That really helped me :D

Yeah. You don't have to edit any scripts for the Control Switches unless you are trying to make them have a special function, such as making all encounters shiny or Random Pokemon or things like that.
