    Thanks: Manning

    This is a japanese group.

Malice Mizer has been described as a dark, neo-classical rock band. The band was formed in 1992 by guitarists Mana and Kozi. Yu~ki, the base player, was added on soon after, followed by a drummer, Gaz, and the vocalist, Tetsu. Gaz soon left the band and was replaced by Kami. They played mostly in clubs and released their first single in 1993, called Sans Logique. After another album, Memoire, and many singles, Tetsu left the band in 1995.

Tetsu?s replacement was Gackt and it was with his vocals that the group became most popular. The next album, Voyage, was released under a larger record company, as opposed to the indies label which the band formerly held. After one more album and countless singles, Gackt left the now wildly popular band in 1999. Later that year, Kami tragically died of a brain aneurism.

After a brief break, Malice Mizer returned in 2000 with a new vocalist, Klaha. The band released their final album, Bara no Seidou, and went on a subsequent tour. Despite their popularity, Malice Mizer broke up in 2001, launching their members into many successful solo careers.

Malice Mizer is famous for its idiosyncratic members. The leader of the band could arguably be pinned as Mana, who is known worldwide for his fashion sense. Mana wears only women?s clothes, makes himself over as a woman, and never speaks in public. The cofounder of Mizer, Kozi, has sometimes obvious masochistic tendencies as well as an obsession with eyes. Yu~ki, the bassist, is deeply immersed in vampire culture and has a well-known love of chocolate. Kami was known for his unusually long hair and affinity for butterflies.

The sound of Malice Mizer has evolved with the band members over the years. In the beginning, the band was a fairly straightforward rock band, who may not stand out if not for their neoclassical undertones. With Gackt, the band took on more catchy beats, although still retaining the haunting melody. Lastly, Klaha?s Mizer had a distinctly classic feel, blending techno, classical, rock, and punk music. Through all the albums, Malice Mizer created strikingly different sounds through the use of unconventional instruments, such as harpsichord or accordion.
