I'm considering giving Manaphy a spot on my battle team once I get Pearl, since I've already beaten Ranger. I was hoping I could get a good strategy and moveset suggestion from someone who knows what Manaphy's best for.

    ^That totally didn't help. -_-

    Manaphy @Leftovers
    Modest Nature
    -Surf
    -Ice Beam
    -Grass Rope
    -Tail Glow

    Seriously sweeps stuff.

Ahh, thanks for the help. I've decided to go with a sleep-oriented Darkrai instead though, gomen. My policy is one legendary per team, and I've already got Gardevoir for my special sweeper. I'll keep that moveset in mind for using Manaphy against NPC trainers though.

I'd probably run Timid Nature and Substitute on mine.

(Except for Japan citizens) If I were you, I'd wait till D/P comes out. Then, movesets would be a wee bit easier.

No need when we've had knowledge of every new Pokemon's moves/stats/traits for months now. It helps to be prepared in advance.

grass rope... who will that keep away other than snorlax? and no, i'm not asking in a judgemental way. i'd appreciate it if you enlightened me. ^.^

i thought of the tail glow sweeping, but grass rope... i haven't had the opportunity of seeing how well it works, so how effective is it in competitive battling?

This is what Serebii.net is for. I just had a tough time picking a moveset. *Shrug*

    Grass Rope calculations

    Less than 10 kg = 20 power
    10.1 kg - 25.0 kg = 40 power
    25.1 kg - 50.0 kg = 60 power
    50.1 kg - 100.0 kg = 80 power
    100.1 kg - 200.0 kg = 100 power
    More than 200.1 kg = 120 power

    I would suggest:

    Calm Mind
    Ice Beam
    Shadow Ball
    Surf

Go ahead and give it a Modest Nature as well. Manaphy is a very good Pokemon, and it also can be unpredictable due to it's Attack and Special Attack being equally good. I went with the Special Sweeping moveset due to the fact that it can learn Calm Mind. I used Shadow Ball over Energy Ball for 20% Chance of effect, as well as the extra 5 Power Points.

oh so it actually takes weaknesses into account? that's awesome. i was thinking it would function like future sight and razor wind.

anywho, thanks a bunch! i was contemplating whether i was gonna have tangela's evo know grass rope and was at the verge of counting it out, but i've definitely reconsidered.

I don't know if Manaphy is a good choice as there's only one, so you can get bad IVs or nature. Even if you restart your D/P Game, a Ranger cartridge can only transfer one Manaphy.

Or I could just save when the egg is close to hatching, then keep hatching and resetting until I get the right nature. :P

I am pretty sure that Natures, etc are determined when the egg is laid, not hatched.

    Calm Mind
    Ice Beam
    Shadow Ball
    Surf
Tail Glow > Calm Mind. Take advantage of Manaphy's sweeping abilities or else don't use it at all.

Shadow Ball is lol. Grass Rope is waaay better since it can actually come close to a OKO on all bulky Waters.

Never knew about this, thanks! Anyway, Grass Knot (yes, that's the real name in English) does work good on Manaphy, but there's an alternative. I got everything from Serebii.net (my favorite site) and this is my findings:

    1. Special Sweeper Manaphy
    Item: Leftovers
    Ability: Hydration
    Nature: Modest (-Atk, +Sp. Atk)
    Surf
    Ice Beam
    Grass Knot/Energy Ball/Psychic/Shadow Ball
    Tail Glow
    EV's: 6 HP, 252 Sp. Atk., 252 Speed

This set (which SPP predict will be the most used) is very straightforward: Use Tail Glow three times to max out your Special Attack and then go for it, using whatever is super effective. Usually, Grass attacks will be used because Psychic and Shadow Ball won't cover any much super-effectives, but they're options. However, its being straightforward makes it predictable and easy to counter.

    2. Rain-Rest Manaphy
    Item: Leftovers/Damp Rock
    Ability: Hydration
Nature: Bold (-Atk, +Def) or Calm (-Atk, +Sp. Def)
    Surf
    Ice Beam/Energy Ball/Grass Knot/Psychic/Shadow Ball
    Rain Dance
    Rest
    EV's: 252 HP, 148 Defense (Bold)/Sp. Def. (Calm), 110 Sp. Atk. or 252 HP, 182 Defense (Calm)/Sp. Def. (Bold), 76 Sp. Def. (Calm)/Defense (Bold)

This set fully abuses Hydration, Manaphy's ability. You have to pick only either versability or survival, and this one is survival. Whenever you need to recover already, use Rest while it's raining and your sleep status will be cured immediately. Leftovers are, as usual, for recovering every turn, while Damp Rock adds three turns to Rain Dance. By the way, Rain Dance also strengthens Surf. You pick whatever's the second attacking move.
