Hey, I haven't posted a blog entry in a while, but I thought I'd post about what I've been doing lately.
Now when I say "Mario Kart Wii 'hacking'", I don't mean cheating hacks or codes. I mean hacking the game's files, textures, models, sounds, etc. I extracted the ISO of it and have been editing files myself.
More specifically, most of it has been textures. I retextured a couple of cars that I thought really needed it (e.g, made the flames on King Boo's "Flame Flyer" (the cars have different names in PAL, so basically it's that car with the flames on it) green).
After I worked out the basic filesystem (i.e, where different files are stored), I decided to do an experiment. A character that I personally never play is Baby Daisy. Meanwhile a character that I thought perhaps I would like to play but isn't in the game is Green Toad. So, I replaced Baby Daisy's model with that of Toad's, but gave it reskined textures I made that made it Green Toad. When I booted it up, I really wasn't expecting it to work just swapping raw models like that, I was just experimenting, and I thought it was just going to crash or something. I picked Baby Daisy and the specific car I replaced, and started up a race. To my complete surprise, there was Green Toad, driving one of Baby Daisy's cars. He still had everything that Baby Daisy had (animations, sound effects, car textures), but it had actually WORKED. The fact that it had worked told me that a complete character replacement, with enough work, was possible.
So that's exactly what I did. Fast-forward an amount of days that I have forgotten and it's finished. Everything works. Green Toad has now replaced Baby Daisy completely. I had to go and replace every single sound effect individually to use Toad's, had to reskin Toad's textures for every single vehicle and then replace the respective one of Baby Daisy's, had to swap the driver models for every single vehicle (each vehicle of a driver actually uses a different driver model file), had to change all of Baby Daisy's layouts, and had to replace all instances of the string "Baby Daisy" with "Green Toad". For fun I even replaced Peach's driver screen image with one of Green Toad (and the sound that plays there as well).
I'm really happy it worked. It's fully functional, I custom reskined all the vehicles. The name of the character even says Green Toad now. I just wanted to post about this. I may post pictures in another blog entry, if I can get them with the Dolphin emulator.
In addition, just for fun I replaced the main menu music with the main theme of Mario Kart 8 :D.
In other news, if you haven't heard, a certain character was revealed to be coming to Smash 4 as DLC.
So much HYPE!!!
Speaking of Smash, Project M 3.6 was announced. Judging by the trailer, it looks awesome. And Project M is my favourite Smash game, so I can't wait!
