Mawilite suspected | Discuss here

I feel like I'm missing something in suggesting this, because it seems obvious but no one's brought it up... but what about mega aggron? I know it has no recovery, but it really seems like it can straight tank almost anything mawile can throw at it. Sadly, toxic won't work and it lacks will o wisp, as well as anything beyond Earthquake to even bother M Mawile.

But as far as taking hits goes; does someone wanna run that damage calc?

Mega houndoom can switch into a predictable sucker punch

+2 252+ Atk Huge Power Mega Mawile Sucker Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mega Houndoom: 179-211 (61.3 - 72.2%)

Mega Houndoom has to be at nearly full health to switch into and kill Mawile, even though it resists Sucker Punch. Given how thoroughly mutilated it gets by Play Rough, I would classify Mega Houndoom as a shaky check.

252+ Atk Huge Power Mega Mawile Focus Punch vs. 252 HP / 16+ Def Filter Mega Aggron: 199-235 (57.8 - 68.3%)

SubPunch is a problem but Aggron can force it out despite taking major damage.

+2 252+ Atk Huge Power Mega Mawile Fire Fang vs. 252 HP / 16+ Def Filter Mega Aggron: 172-204 (50 - 59.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

Fire Fang 2HKOes, though Aggron can do significant damage to Mawile before death. (!)

Otherwise, it walls Mawile since Earthquake is a 2HKO.

Aggron is OK and is viable in OU, but the mega opportunity cost is pretty high.

252 hp/252 defense impish aggron 2 hit ko mega Mawile. A +2 fire fang is a 2-3 (2 hit after stealth rocks I think) hit KO. If it sets up, aggron can roar it out. Not a counter, just a check.

It's a check to Mawile as a whole since Fire Fang isn't terrible common (?), but in any case I think looking at the big picture and what counters/checks have been thrown out there, all of them can be worn down and very few of them are, well, good Pokemon. I think playing the "does this counter Mawile?" game is a little bit of a fool's errand, especially when it's especially devastating against offense (which isn't going to be running stuff like Arcanine or even Rotom-H) which does not like facing Mawile at all. Keld and Terra can "check" it but they're the softest checks around and even they can be picked off by Sucker Punch if they're at low health. Not good at all.

(For what it's worth, I don't think Mawile would be broken if not for its defensive typing which gives it plenty of opportunities to set up. The presence of Mawile in team preview alters game execution in a way comparable to Mega Pinsir, and that's really not a good thing.)

Thanks for the calculations, I was pretty curious and didn't have the link / bookmark handy. That's interesting though - I may have to respec my Mega Aggron from being specially defensive to Atk+Def for that; because I don't see the fire fang or focus punch sets at all - only SD + Play Rough, Iron Head, Sucker Punch.

Mawile can ran SubPunch/Play Rough/Sucker Punch as well as Swords Dance/Play Rough/Sucker Punch and one of Iron Head, Knock Off, or Fire Fang. I personally think Knock Off is the best unless you have Mega Venusaur problems (mostly because it's so spammable), but in any case, Mawile has just enough coverage options to keep you on your toes. (I wouldn't say it's "versatile" though. Deoxys-S was versatile because it could fill multiple roles. Mawile is always going to break as well as sweep if it runs SD, and that's pretty much all it does. It just happens to be amazing at the roles it does fill.)

Mawile-M is ridiculous. It can literally spam Play Rough in most situations and still come out on top. It's slowness is not exactly much of a hindrance because it forces switches a lot. Its most common sets are stellar in breaking and/or sweeping. If you're not dumb, using Mawile-M is basically a free win. Anyone opposing a ban for it are basically cry babies.
