Mirage Island (continued)

if i were to try to get to mirage island non-ARly, and i were to withdraw the matching pokemon, but not bring it to the guy, instead put it in my team, then deposit it back w/o closing the box, would mirage island be acessible, or do i have to close the box, then deposit it, or do i have to go to the old guy first?
