    Asking to become a moderator usually decreases your chance.

    You excel in one part of the forum, if not more, and if the staff notices you for your particular prowess there, they ask you if you wish to become a moderator. Post count is usually insignificant during the process and does not count for much, as quality is more important than quantity. You can't request for the position, here; you 'earn' it, in a sense.
     
    And PMing all the staff won't work either. Just follow the link The Hunk gave and you'll understand why.
