I'm a super casual pokemon player but i understand the basics (i think). Anyway Im just playing gen 3(leaf green in this case) and I notice something weird that i dont understand. My hitmonchan has Brick break which is 75 attack physical fighting type and Mega punch which has 80 attack physical Normal type. And The thing i dont understand is why brick break deals more dmg to the same opponent than mega punch? Does the type of the move give an extra edge in dmg? Sorry for very long post and thanks.

If an attack is the same type as the Pokemon using it, the move has 50% more power. It's usually referred to as "Same Type Attack Boost", or STAB for short. Hitmonchan is a Fighting type, and Brick Break is a Fighting type attack, so it has increased power (more than Mega Punch) in this case.
