I'm willing to take suggestions on a sixth member and held items. Move sets that can be learned, taught by game corner or department store TMs or HMs are up for grabs. Changing natures will be a pain because it requires breeding til I go insane and end up filling 3 or 4 PC boxes in the process.

    Umbreon holding Dread Plate
    Careful Nature
    Synchronize
    Dark Pulse
    Faint Attack
    Mean Look
    Cut

    Espeon holding Mind Plate
    Naive Nature
    Synchronize
    Psychic
    Confusion
    Flash
    Psybeam

    Flareon holding Flame Orb
    Rash Nature
    Flash Fire
    Flamethrower
    Fire Fang
    Fire Blast
    Rock Smash

    Jolteon holding Zap Plate
    Serious Nature
    Volt Absorb
    Shock Wave
    Thunderbolt
    Thunder

    Vaporeon holding Icicle Plate
    Sassy Nature
    Surf
    Whirlpool
    Waterfall
    Ice Beam

Just got Glacion and Leafeon as possible candadites for the 6th slot.

I'll try, although I'm not too experienced. First off, I would advise not having more than 1, or maybe 2 moves of the same type on the same pokemon. Second, with your moves, make sure you're pokemon's weaknesses are covered, for example, teach Flareon an electric move, so if a water pokemon comes in, it can take it out. Third, put physical moves with physical pokemon, and special moves with special pokemon.

On your last pokemon, I would go with dragon(i was the one who voted), because dragon type pokemon are always good stat-wise, and can learn a big variety of moves. Plus, they're usually doubletyped, so you can get two STAB moves. PM me if you want more advice :)

    Hope it was helpful.

Cut Toxic for instance (via TM) may be better, Cut you might as well remove once you don't need it anymore as it is a weak HM move. Problem is that's a Battle Frontier move it seems... Confuse Ray/Moonlight/another TM move like say Return will do better than Cut though - even Headbutt.

    Espeon holding Mind Plate
    Naive Nature
    Synchronize
    Psychic
Confusion No need for this with two other psychic moves - consider say Shadow Ball (TM from Ecruteak
Flash Consider replacing with another move, as you won't be using this too much.
Psybeam Also not too necessary once you get Psychic - but more useful than Confusion at any rate.

    Flareon holding Flame Orb
    Rash Nature
    Flash Fire
    Flamethrower
    Fire Fang
    Fire Blast
    Rock Smash
3 fire moves is too much - two will do at max (in which case I'd advise Flamethrower and Fire Fang as the latter coems off a higher attack stat and you cover both defenses), and consider replacing with say Dig/Iron Tail (low accuracy mind)/Return

    Jolteon holding Zap Plate
    Serious Nature
    Volt Absorb
    Shock Wave
    Thunderbolt
    Thunder
Same deal with the multiple-moves-of-the-same-type - maybe try Rain Dance which'd also help your Thunder and Vaporeon for the longer battles, and maybe Shadow Ball too?

    Vaporeon holding Icicle Plate
    Sassy Nature
    Surf
    Whirlpool
    Waterfall
    Ice Beam
Replace Whirlpool and give it to a HM slave as you'll barely use it + very weak move in battles. Also drop Waterfall as it is a physical move and Vaporeon likes special attacks. Defensivbe moves like Aqua ring won't be too bad an idea for it is a wall and boosting defense, etc make it very hard to take down. Rain Dance is another option to boost Surf.
My two cents in bold above.

this team isn't battle frontier ready I haven't trained up enough for red yet, once have mewtwo I'll get rid of flash. but if dragon is the way to go I think I'll go with dragonite. any suggestions for a specific moveset? I still have roost and pluck tms and the dragon tm from clair(I think).

Here's what I would suggest for your whole team:

    Vaporeon
    Surf
    Ice Beam
    Rest
    Sleep Talk

    Jolteon
    Thunderbolt
    Hidden Power
    Signal Beam
    Shadow Ball

    Flareon
    Fire Fang
    Iron Tail
    Will o' Wisp
    Return

    Espeon
    Psychic
    Hyper Beam
    Grass Knot
    Calm Mind

    Umbreon
    Toxic
    Protect
    Dark Pulse
    Hidden Power/Shadow Ball

    Dragonite
    Dragon Claw
    Stone Edge
    Earthquake
    Brick Break

thanks for the advice, I'm spending time in the battle frontier now trying to get enough points for some of the moves. unfortunately none of these pokemon can learn rock climb so this team as it stands won't get me to Red.
