My Avatar was completely black for a few minutes

After coming out of a store, I opened Pokemon Go (it had been running in background) to see if any Pokemon were around. There was one Rattata. I then noticed my avatar in the center of the screen and in the lower-left corner were both solid black. I saw this just as I was tapping the screen for the Rattata. After capturing the rat, I was back to the main screen and both avatars were still black. I texted a friend to let her know and when I went back to Pokemon Go, all was normal.

Anyone else seen this behavior? Does it mean anything?

I think someone mentioned that this was related to the server updating for the Halloween event? Not really sure... hasn't happened to me yet.
