Sorry to say this, but I say: suck it up. If what you say is true, then a dsi should be the last thing on your mind. You're right when you say you're lucky to be paid minimum wage and have that job, so why waste it on a dsi when your ds lite still works? You should be saving up for college, or a labtop, or something useful.
You may think I'm mean for saying this, but you have to think for a minute here. What's more practical? Saving up for a dsi and waiting of the price to go down and until your ds lite dies, or wasting all your efforts just buying one now? I've had my original blue ds since middle school. I'm going to be a senior in high school this year. My ipod nano (the discontinued version) has also lasted quite a while and yeah, sometimes it just randomly likes to die on me, but that doesn't mean I have the ability to just go out and waste 200+ dollars on getting a new one.
Now, if it didn't work, that might be a different story, but right now I don't see why you can't just wait and then later get a dsi. You should save up a bit of money first, and wait until your ds lite dies before buying a dsi.. The price will probably go down a little by then, ultimately saving you more money.
Have you tried glueing the hinges back together? Also you can always just play on an elevated surface, like a pillow or something, which can hold you ds lite up somewhat.
