Hmm for some reason I prefer Neji to Black Mage. For me, the concept of mage is clean and precise, not grunged.

It looks cut off awkwardly. The background is very fine but... the border isn't.

Hmm... very nice... a suggestion, how about making a bit of glow on the eyes? Cliche but... that style looks cool. Also, the word on the top right, 1 or 2 pixels to the right if possible...

I suggest you put the text layer over the checkerbox layer, then make the text slightly transparent.
