Prologue
It is late at night, and the clouds are covering the stars and the moon. Outside, two intruders approach the fence of an abandoned mansion. Silently, they move over to the fence, and start to climb it. The pair of them climbs over the fence, and proceed to the entrance way, a door off its hinges?.
?Arc!? came a sound from inside, and suddenly bursting through the door, growling at the pair, was a large fiery Arcanine, who didn?t seem to take kindly to strangers. The female threw a pokeball, revealing a Venonat? the other frowned at the choice, but could see why she did that. The Arcanine turned to face it?s opponent, opened it?s mouth and a jet of flame shot out, but somehow the Venonat jumped out of the way, and started shaking? it leaped over the Arcanine, dusting a powder over the huge dog-like Pokemon? the Arcanine drooped down, then fell to sleep, resting it?s head on it?s paws. The trainer recalled her Venonat, and they both headed inside the mansion.
Inside, they began a frantic search through old records, throwing useless files everywhere.
?Any luck?? calls one of them, the female of the two.
?No,? replies the man. ?You sure this is the right place??
?It wouldn?t be guarded for nothing, now hurry up and find it before that Arcanine wakes up,? she says, then heads over to another filing cabinet to search.
After a few more minutes of searching, going through everywhere they could, the female pulls out a folder, smiling to herself. ?I think I found it!? Blowing the dust from the folder, the title reveals itself ? Project Mewtwo. Just then, the sound of footsteps heads their way, followed by a growling sound?
?He woke up? whispers the man. ?Let me try this time.? Then, he reaches for a pokeball, which opens to reveal a Staryu. He follows the Staryu out to the corridor, standing behind the pokemon, as they both stand in front of the growling Arcanine.
?Staryu, Water Gun!?
The Staryu responds by opening the top point and shooting a jet of water at the Arcanine, which is knocked back, and starts yelping as the water covers him. The Staryu stops, as the Arcanine lies on its side for the moment. The man calls the Staryu back to its pokeball.
?Come on, let?s get out of here,? he says. With that, the pair starts to run out of the laboratory, the woman clutching onto the folder as the Arcanine struggles to his feet. He shakes himself off, the water spraying everywhere, and then he starts to walk out of the mansion, weakened from the water blast. He catches a glimpse of them just getting over the fence, and he starts to run but gets there too late, as they both make it over the fence and start to run away into the night. The Arcanine starts howling into the air.
What no-one noticed however, is that a small floating object started following the pair from high in the sky, hidden by the clouds?

Chapter 1
Matt looked over at his opponent, then at the Pokemon he had chosen to battle with. It was a pretty menacing looking Rhyhorn, and Matt knew he didn?t have anything with a type advantage against the Pokemon. Without a good Grass, Ice, Fighting or Water type, he was in trouble. He looked to his pokeballs, pausing for a moment.
?Well? Are you going to battle or not?? The opponent he was fighting was called James, and was a pretty tough opponent. He has already been to three gyms, denoted by the badges he proudly wore on his jacket. Nevertheless, Matt had challenged him because he was one of the toughest trainers on Cinnibar Island. Matt was around 18, but don't let his age fool you, he's surprisingly tough.
Without saying anything, Matt picked out one of the pokeballs, throwing it in front of the Rhyhorn. Out popped Matt?s toughest and favourite Pokemon, his Absol. His Absol was Matt?s first Pokemon, and one of the babies of his father?s Pokemon. His father had set himself up as a breeder when he retired from training. James looked down at the Absol, sneering at it. ?Ok, this should be over quick. Rhyhorn, Horn Drill attack!?
Matt knew what that meant! His opponent intended to knock his Absol out in one hit! Of course, Horn Drill was known for not hitting very often, but the idea still worried him. ?Absol, Double Team!? The Absol gave off a sort of sheen from it?s white coat, creating an illusion of a second one standing next to it. The Rhyhorn charged forward, its horn rotating like a drill, as he sees the two opponents in front of him, he decides to go for one of them, and charges right through? an empty space. The illusion dissipates, as the Rhyhorn charges straight through. The small crowd that had gathered to see the two fight backs off as the large Pokemon slows down from its charge.
Matt knew he couldn?t let that happen again. ?Absol, Bite him!? The Absol charges after the Rhyhorn, catching a bite around his leg. Absol lets go, and the Rhyhorn winces in pain, as it turns around to look at the Absol.
James frowns, his Rhyhorn was pretty tough, so that bite had to hurt. ?Rhyhorn, Tackle it.? In response, the Rhyhorn pauses, struggling on his foot. Matt grinned, he knew he had the advantage now, it was time to finish the match. ?Absol, Faint Attack.?
The Absol, started to run to the left of the Rhyhorn, and somehow vanishes from sight for a brief moment, reappearing at the right of the Rhyhorn to give it a heavy impact into his side, making the Rhyhorn struggle again on his feet. After a few moments, the Rhyhorn gives up, and lies down, exhausted. The Absol smiles, and runs back to Matt, who pets his Pokemon smiling ?Well done Absol, you did it!?
James stands over his Rhyhorn, looking down at the leg. ?Are you ok? Come on, let?s get you to the Pokemon Centre.? James picks up his pokeball, and the Rhyhorn disappears inside. Then he turns to Matt. ?Hey, you?re pretty tough. What?s your name??
?It?s Matt. What?s yours??
?I?m James.? James smiles. ?Guess I?ve still got a bit more training to do.?
?Well, keep working on it, I?m sure you?ll get better next time.? Matt waves, as the trainer heads off in the direction of the Pokemon Centre.
Out of the crowd gathered, there was a lot of talk.
?Wow Matt, that was pretty cool,? says one of the girls gathered there. This was Mandy, and she always seemed to go quiet whenever Matt was around. With anyone else, you could never shut her up.
?Er, thanks.? He smiled.
?Hey, have you seen the paper today?? interrupted someone. This was Roger, and was friends with both Matt and Mandy.
?No. Should I have?? asks Matt.
?Oh yeah. You know the old abandoned mansion? Someone broke in their last night!? says Roger, excited.
?Really? Let?s see.? Roger pulls up the newspaper, with the headline ?Mansion Break-In. Arcanine Injured.?
Starting to read the article out loud, Matt looks at the paper. ?Last night, the mansion at Cinnibar Island was broken into. Strangely enough, the crooks didn?t manage to get away with anything, but the Arcanine who was guarding the mansion was injured in their get away. Police are looking into the matter, but so far no evidence has been brought to light.? He looks up. ?Wow, that?s pretty cool. I wonder who breaks into somewhere but doesn?t take anything.?
?Yeah, I was thinking about that. Maybe they did take something but they didn?t want us to know about it? like a big secret or something.? Roger scratches his chin.
?I heard rumours about that old place, wasn?t it owned by Team Rocket at one point?? Matt says.
?Wow, that?s like old. I heard some guy named Red kicked them all out though.? says Mandy.
?Yeah, I heard about that. Maybe there really is some big secret. Wanna go check it out?? says Roger, smiling.
?Are you crazy?? says Mandy ?There?s police and everything up there; we?ll be caught like straight away.?
?Not true. I?ve just been over there. The guard Arcanine has been taken to the Pokemon Centre for healing, and the police have gone for now. It?ll be clear. Maybe we can find out what they were really after?? says Roger
?I dunno, maybe there really wasn?t anything to take. It?s been abandoned for years, after all,? says Matt.
?Yeah, but that makes it more exciting. Come on, I know you?ve both got nothing better to do this afternoon. Besides doing your homework, of course?" Roger grinned. He knew if he reminded them that they had homework to do, they would look into almost anything to get out of it.
Matt shrugged. ?Alright, I?m game. Are you coming too, Mandy??
?Sure, why not.? She frowned, thinking this was a bad idea, but it was better than homework.
-----------------------------
Elsewhere, in a van somewhere just outside town, the two thieves sat in the front. The files on Project Mewtwo were safely stashed in the glove compartment, and the man was on the phone to someone?
?What do you mean, we have to go back??Uh-huh? ok? right. I see. *sighs* We?ll do it now, before we leave town.? He presses a button and puts the mobile phone away.
?What now? I thought he said that would be it?? the female drums her fingers on the dashboard, impatiently.
?It seems that he wants something else apart from those files. Like he could have told us the first time.? He shrugs. ?He wants us to go into the basement and get a key, said it was very important for something, I dunno.?
?And that?ll be it this time??
?I assume so. He gave me some excuse about not having all the information the first time around. I just hope this is worth the money.?
?It better be. Come on, let?s get this over with and get out of here.?
The female starts up the engine of the van, and drives back towards the mansion.
